SALEM – A Lynn man charged last week with beating a 3-month-old child to death accrued new charges Thursday after prison guards reported finding the man with drugs.”I informed Gideika that the substance tested positive for cocaine and that I was going to charge him with possession of Class B and delivering drugs to a prisoner,” Investigator Stephen Beaulieu of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a report. “Gideika folded his arms and stated that he did not want to talk to me anymore ? before I opened the door he stated that it was “Sobo” (Sobo is a slang word for Suboxone).”Anthony Gideika, 32, of 526 Western Ave. #1, was arrested and charged with possession of Class B drugs; and delivering drugs to a prisoner.Gideika was arraigned in Lynn District Court July 10 on a charge of assault and battery on a child with substantial injury in the death of 3-month-old Chase Gideika.In that incident, police and fire personnel responded to the Western Avenue address on a report the infant was not breathing and took the child to Salem Hospital and then Massachusetts General Hospital.A prosecutor said doctors evaluating the infant’s injuries determined the child had been shaken severely on multiple occasions and was slammed during the 48 hours that Anthony Gideika was caring for the infant and his twin brother. The other infant was unharmed and is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.Chase Gideika died the morning of Anthony Gideika’s arraignment.Lynn District Court Judge Stephen Abany ordered Anthony Gideika held on $100,000 cash bail.Anthony Gideika appeared in Salem District Court Thursday to be arraigned on the drug charges, according to court documents.An investigator reported Gideika was found with a white powdery substance, later determined to be part of a pill, on July 11, the day after his arraignment in Lynn.The substance tested positive for cocaine in a field test, according to the investigator’s report.Gideika told the investigator that he had a prescription for a generic form of suboxone and had two pills in his pocket when he was arrested, according to court documents.Gideika told the investigator that he took one pill after being transferred from the police station to jail. He hid the other in his mouth, then in a sock, according to the report. Officers performing a strip search found the pill “between Gideika’s buttocks area” when they moved him to another unit, according to the report.The substance has been submitted for further testing, according to court documents.Court documents show Judge Michael Lauranzano revoked bail on the Lynn charges, meaning that Gideika will be held without bail for up to 60 days. Lauranzano also ordered $10,000 cash bail for the new charges.Gideika’s attorney could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.Gideika is next scheduled to be in Lynn District Court on July 25 for a probable-cause hearing.Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
