SAUGUS – Sunday afternoon’s 15-year-old state Babe Ruth State Tournament matchup at World Series Park between Plymouth and host Saugus had the early makings of a classic ball game.Up 2-1 after four innings, the visitors grabbed two in the fifth before exploding for a six run sixth, batting around in the process. When all was said and done, Plymouth would have an easy 11-2 victory, and its first win of the tourney.end the game.Saugus (0-2) is mathematically eliminated from further contention, but is guaranteed a third game as are all teams. The hosts’ final contest comes Thursday (5:30) against the Inter-Town squad. While the big inning might stand out as the games defining moment, its real story was the effort of Plymouth starting pitcher Ryan Obin who threw a complete game, allowing solo runs in the first and last innings. In between those frames he was borderline brilliant, finishing with a final line of seven strikeouts, one earned run on seven hits, and just one walk. The lefty also got it done with the bat, going 2-4 with a solo homer in the seventh while scoring three runs. The nightmarish sixth for Saugus started when Kurt Martin, on in relief of starter Luke Surette, walked the bases loaded, before being removed in favor of Anthony Freni. Things didn’t improve however as Plymouth’s Brandon Maguire and Colin Nicklas drew RBI free passes. An error at second base on a pickoff attempt by catcher John Prentice allowed another run to cross before Brett Cabral lofted an RBI sacrifice fly to deep left, upping the lead to eight. Justin Cabral and Nick Ditulio followed with a run scoring double and single respectively before the inning ended on a pop out to first. The inning prior saw the visitors open up a 4-1 lead off of Surette who pitched very well despite the loss. Brett Cabral ripped a line drive off of third baseman Nick Lanndry’s glove and down the line for a two-run double scoring Obin (single) and Nicklas (double).Surette allowed just two runs (one earned) through the first four frames, attempting to keep his team in it. Plymouth got their first two tallies on sacrifice flies from Griffin Condon in the second, and Brett Cabral in the third.Saugus picked up the first run of the contest in their first at bats off of Obin. After Prentice was plunked to lead things off, Surette ripped a single to left. Pat Murray followed with a bloop double down the right field line, scoring Prentice from second.Five fruitless innings would follow however, despite plenty of chances to score. Obin escaped the second with two men on and would allow at least one runner to reach in every inning after. The host’s would strand eight runners total in the game.Saugus did manage to scrape across one more in the final inning off of Obin. After walking Adam Dichiara and Prentice, the Plymouth hurler surrendered a two-out RBI single to Murray, who was thrown out attempting to stretch a double to
