SAUGUS – For the second straight game, the Lynn 15-year-old Babe Ruth team ran into a solid start by the opposing pitcher who shut down its offense, almost entirely.View Photo GalleryNewton’s Phillip Barnett limited the host’s to five hits through five innings on the way to an 8-2 victory for the visitors on Saturday evening at World Series Park.”We managed to grab some runs today but this game was very much like yesterday’s loss to Braintree,” said Lynn manger Ron Gaudet. “We had some chances and did our best to make things happen but Newton made all the plays they needed to so hats off to them.”Newton put up a three spot in the second getting an RBI single from Jack Marsjanik scoring Christian Quigley who led off the inning with a walk. Both Marsjanik and Mike Gately who reached in a single, would come around on a two-run base hit by Barnett out of the nine-hole.The Lynners finally got on the board for the first time in the tournament, scoring one in the bottom of the second. With two down, Marques O’Neal delivered an RBI single scoring Brandon Devin who had doubled to lead off the inning.Newton got the run back in the fourth thanks to some sloppy Lynn defense. Marsjanik came around for the second time after an errant throw at shortstop by Joe Tardiff. Newton would grab two more in the fifth to increase their lead to five. After two straight outs, Lynn starting pitcher Ryan Desmarais surrendered a single to Cam Meyer before a free pass to Kane Medina. Quigley followed with a two-run rip to right-center, scoring both runners. Despite five earned runs on 11 hits, Gaudet believed his starter pitched well.”He pitched very well I thought,” said Gaudet. “Unfortunately there were mistakes behind him and at this level you usually either need to make all the plays or score a lot to win and we haven’t done that.”The home team would pick up its final run in the sixth after Barnett walked the bases loaded to begin the inning, before being removed in favor of Will Slayne. O’Neal greeted the reliever with an RBI single to left, scoring Devin once again. Newton added two more in the final frame to close the scoring.”I thought their starter pitched a great game,” said Gaudet of Barnett’s outing. “We made some solid contact off the second guy but sometimes you need a little luck and we didn’t get any in the form of wild throws or misplays, they were solid all around.”Lynn, now 0-2 in the Eastern Massachusetts Babe Ruth State Tournament, is not mathematically eliminated yet, but will need a miracle to advance. Regardless, the tournament guarantees all teams three games so the locals will return for a game on Friday against Taunton. “It’s not over yet, but if we don’t make it we still have to show up,” explained Gaudet of his team’s tournament future. “You have to come and play your heart out no matter what because every game matters.”
