Lynn man held without bail after alleged strangling

SALEM – A judge ordered a Lynn man held without bail Friday after a woman told police an attempted reconciliation resulted in her being held by the neck against a wall.”(The alleged victim) stated that she and (the defendant) were together tonight because they were trying to fix their relationship,” Salem Police Officer Brian Benson wrote in a police report.”(She) states that he then placed his right hand around (the alleged victim’s) neck and lifted (her) up off of her feet while still holding her against the wall.”Ryan McCarthy, 29, of 71 Lakeview Ave., Lynn, was arrested and charged with assault and battery; and attempted murder; on Friday.Salem Police reported responding to a Summer Street address at 2:24 a.m. Friday and meeting the alleged victim outside the apartment. She told police she and McCarthy had been separated for several months, but were trying to reconcile, and had gone out for dinner and drinks with the alleged victim’s roommates that night.The alleged victim told police they all returned to the apartment. She said she and McCarthy began arguing after he looked at her phone “and made a comment that all her other boyfriends are trying to get a hold of her,” police reported.The alleged victim told police that McCarthy backed her against a wall and then began strangling her, according to the report.”(She) stated that it felt like he had held her there for a long time,” police reported.The alleged victim said she punched McCarthy and he let her go, according to the police report. Police reported finding McCarthy in the roommates’ bedroom and arresting him without incident.McCarthy was arraigned in Salem District Court Friday and prosecutors requested McCarthy be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, according to court documents.Judge Matthew Machera granted the request and McCarthy is scheduled to return to court July 26, according to court documents.
