LYNN —The rain is truly becoming a thorn in the side of the 2013 edition of the Lynn Little League City Series.
After three complete innings of play, Friday evening’s tilt between the Wyoma Reds and West Lynn Red Sox was postponed because of a steady and nagging rain. The game will pick up where it left off tomorrow evening, back at Spagnoli Field at Pine Hill (5 p.m.)
The visitors from Wyoma will enter Saturday up 3-0 and coming to the plate. After West Lynn starting pitcher Lou Vidal breezed through the first, striking out the side, Wyoma was able to grab a run in the second.
After back to back walks to Brandon Lannon and Matt Godbout, a passed ball led to a throw to third by Aedan Leydon that deflected off of Nick Medeiros’ glove and into left field, scoring Lannon.
Vidal would minimize the damage however, sandwiching a walk to Andrew Luciano in between strikeouts of Kyle Finnigan and Mike Carroll. With two men on, Vidal induced nine-hitter Jackson Nickolau into a groundout to first to end the inning.
With a cold rain falling, the Indians increased their lead to three in the evening’s final inning. After a walk to Spencer DiVirgilio, Vidal plunked Brett Bucklin leading to a sharp RBI single through the right side by David Barnard. Lannon added an RBI groundout before Vidal was removed for Leydon.
Meanwhile, Wyoma was getting a brilliant pitching performance from DiVirgilio, despite the slippery conditions. The lefties first inning featured two strikeouts and a weak grounder back to the mound and he struck out the side in the third (the final half inning.)
The wet ball may have contributed to a couple second inning walks to Aaron Eng and Medeiros but Godbout threw out Eng, attempting to steal second. DiVirgilio got Matt Clark swinging to end the frame, leaving Medeiros at first.
When the game recommences, Wyoma will be coming up with their bench likely to enter as pinch hitters. The Indians got solid contributions from the trio of Brandon Small, Reece Archer and Lucas Fritz in their mercy-rule shortened victory over Pine Hill this past Saturday.
