LYNN – After three complete innings of play on Friday evening, the Wyoma versus West Lynn City Series game was postponed until Saturday. Up 3-0 after three innings of play on day one, Wyoma withstood a West Lynn rally, holding on for a 5-3 victory at Spagnoli Field.Friday?s three innings featured a spectacular pitching performance by Wyoma?s Spencer DiVirgilio, who didn?t allow a hit while striking out six batters. Wyoma manager Jack Carroll spoke on his day one starter?s work of art.?Spencer was awesome (Friday) and really set the table for us,” said Carroll. “He kept the ball down low and hit his spots while keeping their batters off balance. He was the key to this win and is a real pitcher, not just a thrower.”When the game recommenced the following evening, DiVirgilio was off the mound and West Lynn took advantage of it.A leadoff solo home run by Aedan Leydon off reliever David Barnard got the home team on the board. After a one-out walk to Miguel Valera, Barnard responded with back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning.A two-run top of the fifth by Wyoma proved to be the difference in the game. Barnard started the scoring with a scalding grounder down the third base line that scored DiVirgilio, who led off with a single to left field. Barnard would score on a misplayed fly ball in centerfield.West Lynn got those runs right back in its half of the fifth, but it wasn?t enough. After back-to-back walks to Will Hunter and Leydon loaded the bases, Barnard was removed with two outs.Brett Bucklin came on to face Lou Vidal and induced a ground ball to second that got through Andrew Luciano, scoring both Dan Iroala and Hunter. After walking Valera, Bucklin bore down and left the bases loaded on a weak grounder in front of the plate that catcher Matt Godbout picked up and stepped on home himself. Kyle Finnigan came on for a successful save attempt.A quick start for the Wyoma offense on Friday proved just as valuable as DiVirgilio?s stellar work on the mound.Brendan Lannon factored into two of the three Wyoma runs, scoring after a throwing blunder in the second and bringing in another with a groundout in the third. In between those was an RBI single from Barnard.?Those three runs could have proven either a blessing or a bad thing for us because to that point we had only played half a game,” explained Carroll. “We had to show up (Saturday) and play to our full potential on every at-bat and our guys did that, fortunately.”It wasn?t easy, however, as West Lynn kept things mighty close, a fact Carroll did not overlook.?They did a great job,” said the manager of his opponent?s resilience. “I thought they were smart in the way they handle their pitching and in their approach at the plate. They stuck in there.”The win keeps Wyoma in the winner?s bracket, where it will next play on Tuesday against West Lynn, which defeated Pine Hill 9-8 on Sunday.
