NAHANT – Nahant Police say a Lynn man was drunk when he crashed into a light pole near Nahant and Tallwood roads.Joshua W. Dembowski, 24, of 31 Walter St., was arrested and charged with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of property damage on Thursday at 2:45 a.m.According to police reports, officers responded to the area of 240 Nahant Road for a report of a car into a pole at 2:23 a.m. Police found a car stopped further down the street at Nahant Road and Pond Street. The report states police observed a gray Nissan Sentra with “heavy front end damage” and with the passenger side airbag deployed. The report states a man with no shirt, later identified as Dembowski, was attempting to change the front right tire. Dembowski stated he was driving when his phone lit up and when he reached down to answer it he swerved into the light pole, said the report. The report states the pole was 50 feet from the base and when police asked Dembowski why he didn?t stop, the report states Dembowski told police he thought he just hit the curb and didn?t realize the airbag had deployed. The report states officers noticed a moderate odor of alcohol, and that Dembowski had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet. Police conducted two field sobriety tests and the report states that officers determined he was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.The report states police found an empty bottle of Smirnoff apple vodka on the passenger seat and a backpack with seven full Bud Light cans and a three-quarter full bottle of Smirnoff apple vodka.Dembowski was released on personal recognizance and is due back in court on Sept. 23.
