LYNN – A judge ordered an Everett man held without bail Monday after a Western Massachusetts man training to be a police officer said he saw a man beating a woman in a car on Liberty Street late Friday night, reported it, then rescued the woman from the car.”I realized the passenger was a female and she was getting punched closed fist,” witness Sydney Riley, 34, of Holyoke, said on Monday afternoon. “I flagged the first officer I saw then turned around ? and when I got back the gentleman was on top of the female in the passenger seat, literally choking her.”Andre Nguessan, 47, of 928 Broadway #3, Everett, was arrested and charged with kidnapping; assault and battery; and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; at 12:29 a.m. Saturday.Nguessan was arraigned Monday afternoon in Lynn District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.Riley said he had been in Lynn visiting a friend Friday night and found himself stopped at a red light behind two other cars. He said the light changed to green and the car that was two cars ahead of him at the intersection went through the light. But Riley said the car directly in front of him didn’t move.”I’m just a patient person, I don’t honk or anything,” Riley recalled. But he said he noticed movement in the car and realized it was two people fighting and that one of them was a woman who was being seriously assaulted.Riley said he saw the police station was nearby and went towards the parking lot, flagging down the first officer he saw. He then returned to the scene; his training as a reservist in the U.S. Marines Corps, in the police academy and as part-time police officer in Holyoke kicking into action.”We have talked about things like this coming up,” Riley said. “You have to step in and try to stop it; especially in a serious assaultive situation ? I have a lot of training in physical situations.”The alleged victim told police she was walking near Lynn Common when Nguessan pulled his car up beside her and asked her for sex, according to a report by Lynn Police Officer David Spelta. The alleged victim told police she got into the SUV and, while driving away, Nguessan told her “he wanted to (expletive) her.”The alleged victim told police she refused and she tried several times to make Nguessan pull over and let her out. Nguessan allegedly began punching the woman and she told police she began hitting Nguessan to get him to let her out of the SUV.The woman said Nguessan continued to assault her as they drove, according to the report. The woman told police she then took Nguessan’s cell phone when the car arrived at the red light at Washington and Liberty streets, bit his hand and then tried to pull the keys from the vehicle’s ignition. Witnesses told police Nguessan then slammed the alleged victim’s head against the passenger window and began choking her.Police reported the alleged victim had several bumps on her head and red marks on her neck.Prosecutors requested Monday that Nguessan be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. Judge James LaMothe granted the request, ordering Nguessan to return to court today for the hearing, according to court documents.Riley said he also will be returning to court today in case he is called to testify. Meanwhile, he said he has always wanted to be a police officer and is scheduled to graduate from the police academy on Oct. 8.
