There’s another Hill on the Horizon … young Kenny

August 10, 2013 by mdinitto

If Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M ends up running afoul of NCAA regulations, the son of Lynn native Ken Hill is one of several quarterbacks on the Aggies’ roster waiting to step in.Kenny Hill, a freshman, certainly has the chops judging from his high school career. Hill, whose father won 117 games as a major leaguer with eight different teams, was the Texas Gatorade Player of the year and Class 5A offensive player of the year in 2012. At Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, Hill completed 139 of 209 passes for 2,291 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 102 times for 905 yards and scored 22 TDs.Hill also received Class 5A all-state honors from the Associated Press and was first-team Super Team (Fort Worth Star Telegram), all-area first-team (Dallas Morning News) and District 4-5A MVP.As a junior ini 2011, Hill was 243-of-286, for 3,014 yards and 25 TDs with nine picks. He ran the ball 280 times, gaining 1,400 yards and scored 24 TDs, leading his team to the state championship title.Hill was heavily recruited and chose A&M over Kansas State, Baylor, Houston, Ole Miss, Missouri, North Carolina, Southern Miss, TCU, Texas Tech, and Utah. Two things factored into Hill’s decision to go with the Aggies. One was its inclusion into the Southeast Conference.”Everyone wants to be in the SEC,” Hill told rivals.com, a branch of Yahoo Sports.Equally central to his decision was A&M’s hiring of Kevin Sumlin as its new head coach. According to Yahoo Sports, the new coaching staff is a big reason why so many prospects chose the school.Manziel, known as “Johnny Football,” is being investigated for taking money for signing autographs. The NCAA has stopped selling merchandise that can be linked directly to various college players after an ESPN investigation that showed how easy it was to find merchandise with the likenesses and names of players on its website. The NCAA is also being sued by a collection of former college players who claim the organization made money off their likenesses while they could not.Including Manziel and Hill, A&M has seven quarterbacks on the roster, two of whom (Matt Joeckel and Ace Fierro) are juniors. Hill, Matt Davis, Connor McQueen and Connor Fiest are freshmen. Manziel is the only sophomore. The elder Hill, a Lynn Classical graduate, pitched in the 1995 World Series while with the Cleveland Indians. He also made the 1994 National League All-Star team while a member of the Montreal Expos – who were in first place, and in line to win the NL East, when the Major League baseball players struck. He finished second to Greg Maddux for the NL Cy Young Award.
