LYNNFIELD – Three firefighters were taken a local hospital for heat exhaustion and dehydration after a two-alarm fire broke out in the town?s Department of Public Works garage Tuesday afternoon.
?It was a hot day and they worked really hard,” said Lynnfield Fire Deputy Chief Glenn Davis Tuesday evening. He said the firefighters were each treated and released.
According to Lynnfield Fire Department dispatch, a call reporting the fire was placed at 2:38 p.m. The garage is located directly behind Town Hall and the fire/police station on Summer Street. A second-alarm was called at 2:44 p.m., with departments from Lynn, Peabody, Wakefield, Reading and North Reading responding.
The blaze was out in under an hour, but not before causing considerable damage.
Curiosity drew town residents Frank and Margaret Pasciuto to scene upon hearing the fire engines. Frank Pasciuto said as soon as he arrived in the DPW parking lot, there were two “pretty good explosions” that sent smoke and fire streaming through the roof.
Pasciuto said he believed the fire that started in one of the trucks in the garage.
?They did a pretty good job considering the size of it,” said Frank Pasciuto. “It went down pretty quick, but there was a lot of smoke.”
Pasciuto said homeowners on the other side of the garage were “pretty nervous” at their proximity to the fire. “If you live in Lynnfield, you know this is pretty big,” he said, himself a resident for 30 years in the town.
Davis said the state fire marshal was investigating the fire and no cause or estimate on the damage had been determined. He said that an engine remained on the scene as of 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
