Candidate drops out of Saugus selectmen race

September 6, 2013 by Matt Tempesta

SAUGUS – The field of candidates for selectmen dropped to 10 after Eugene Decareau said Wednesday he won?t be running after all.?After giving it a lot of thought I think I will be better off serving the people by working with the Saugus Concerned Citizens,” he said. “I think I can do more for the town and the people by working with them so I?m not going to put my papers in.”Some candidates could not be reached for comment for Wednesday?s election story, including candidates Maureen Dever and Joshua J. Greenstein.Dever said Thursday she?s running to help restore some “civility and decorum” to the board and noted she thinks the selectmen have spent “a lot of time in disharmony.”?There?s a lot of conflict, a lot of aggression toward one another …” said Dever. “There?s a lot of time spent with that and we?re just getting back into a stable foundation after the audits. This has progressed where the board appears to be in disharmony, particularly over the manager?s contract, but now it seems to have extended toward the residents who come to the board. It just really bothers me to hear someone told at a public meeting, ?Sit down or I?ll have you removed.?”Greenstein, who is 30, said one of the main reasons he?s running is to give his age group more of a voice, and noted he also wants to improve the school system and the parks around town.?We?re one of the only cities or towns that don?t have the younger crowd representing the age group of the mid-20s to mid-40s where people are starting families and starting their life,” he said ” ? I feel that age group is not represented in Saugus and I can bring that to the table.”School Committee candidate Vincent Serino, who could not be reached for Thursday?s School Committee election story, said Thursday he wants to better the schools and take a look at the curriculum. Serino said he wants to take time and look at all aspects of the district to see what can be improved.?I have two kids that went through the school system,” said Serino. “I now have two kids that are in the school system. I grew up in Saugus and went through the school system. I think I can make a difference. We have great teachers in the school system and great administrators. Obviously budget concerns are a big thing. I really want to sit down and look at everything.”
