A grand tradition will be renewed Saturday morning when Lynn Tech?s football team travels to Northeast Regional (10) to play the Golden Knights.Tech and Northeast have a long history. For many years, the teams played on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and the game served as a wrapup for both. That ended when the Tigers agreed to play St. Mary?s on the night before Thanksgiving, and the game has fallen to the whim of the schedule maker ever since. But outside of the Spartans, the Knights are as good a rival to the Tigers as any. This season, the Tigers are in the Commonwealth Conference/Small, and in Division 6 in the post-season playoff picture. They were to open their season last week against Pope John, but the school discontinued its program, at least for this season, so Saturday serves as the official opener for Tech.In 1987, after a successful season, Tech?s star running back Rick Drislane was killed in an auto accident on Thanksgiving night. The Knights also had a former star, Ed Repucci, die in an accident. The two teams each name an MVP in honor of their fallen former players, and the coaching staffs gather the players after the game and speak to them on making good choices. Also on tap for Saturday:Fenwick at Hamilton-WenhamAt H-W (1), the Crusaders open what they hope is a banner season for them. They came within a late-game fumble last season of beating St. Mary?s and possibly winning the Catholic Central League, and this season they expect to be in the hunt too.The Generals, two years removed from a Super Bowl season, were 6-4 in 2012, and have a lot of new faces this fall.Brockton at St. John?sAt Cronin Stadium (1:30), the Eagles got too far behind last week before recovering in the second half, but the result was still a 21-14 loss. The Boxers will look to avenge, somewhat, the Super Bowl rout they suffered at the hands of the Eagles last December.St. John?s begins a stretch of games with Brockton, Central Catholic (away) and Everett (home) before entering the Catholic Conference portion of its schedule.Newburyport at LynnfieldAt Lynnfield Middle School (11), the Pioneers are looking to get back to the Super Bowl this year … and possibly win it this time. The attack centers on senior Kyle McGah, who had a very strong junior season at running back. With the advent of the new post-season system, the Cape Ann League is intact, with the addition of Saugus.
