Golf: English impresses in first win

The English golf team played its best match of the season, and defeated Revere, 46 1/2-25 1/2, at Gannon Thursday. It was the Bulldogs? first win of the year.Bulldog freshman Chris Cole stole the show at No. 7, in his second-ever match against varsity competition. Not only did Cole win his match handily (9-0), he shot the low round of the day as well (39 on the back). Matt Cole (brother of Chris) was impressive in his own right, winning at No. 8 (8-1). The other English winners were: Matt Sencabaugh, No. 1 (7-2); Matt Bruneau, No. 2 (6-3) and Christina Lannon, No. 6 (5-4). Dan Rustani tied his match for the Bulldogs at No. 4 (4 1/2-4 1/2).?We know that this group is very talented and more than capable of having a successful season,” English coach Tara Friedman said. “We have been trying to instill in all of our kids to always remain positive in all of their efforts on and off the course, and have the belief in themselves that they can be successful.”English (1-3) will play Classical Tuesday.Mhd. 177, St. Mary?s 164At Gannon Golf Course, the Magicians got the best of the Spartans despite strong play by Shawn MacBurnie, who had 36 points; Emmitt O?Shea, 25 points; Chris Price, 24 points, and Brad Dill, 21 points. St. Mary?s is 2-1.Marblehead coach Jim Keating said this was his team?s first time playing a quota system and everybody responded well. The Magicians are 4-1.Beverly 41, Peabody 31At Beverly Golf and Tennis, the Tanners (2-2) had wins from Matt Correale at No. 2, 5-4, and Ted Izzo at No. 5. Steve Ferrante halved his match at No. 3. Last year, the Tanners finished second behind the Panthers in the Northeastern Conference.Sal. 40 1/2, Classical 31 1/2At Olde Salem Greens, the Witches (2-2) had wins from Kyle Doherty at No. 1, 5-4; Madison Ballou at two, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Cam Twomey at five, 6-3; A.J. Darmody at six, Wes Schaejbe at seven, 5 1/2-3 1/2, and Josh Powers at eight, 5 1/2-3 1/2. The Rams picked up wins from Mark Brazell at No. 3, 7-2, and Pat Finnigan at No. 4, 5-3.St. John?s 226, M.C. 257At Mt. Hood, the dynamic sophomore duo of Steven Dilisio of Swampscott and James Turner topped the field again. Both shot a 1-over 36. Justin Serowik of Marblehead also helped the cause with a 40. The Eagles are 3-1.
