NAHANT – The Nahant Public Library really needs a friend right now. After two decades of work, Robin DeStefano is stepping down from her role as head of the Friends of the Nahant Public Library. Director Jen Inglis said DeStefano will be a big loss because she did much of the necessary hands-on work to support the library, including collecting money during book sales, drawing up flyers for library events, planning programs, balancing the checkbook and advising Inglis with her institutional knowledge.?She?s been doing a lot of work for a long time,” said Inglis.Inglis added that as the spouse of the former library director, Dan DeStefano, Robin DeStefano has “done her time.”Now Inglis is using the vacancy as an opportunity to gain more than one active member to head the 150 dues-paying friends. Inglis said she?s hoping to get enough people involved to build a core group of five to 25 people to support the library where its budget lacks, in areas of technology and programming.?When Robin retires, that may be the end of the Friends if we can?t find someone to step into her position,” wrote Inglis in an email. “If you know of anyone who might be interested, please have them contact me or Robin.”The Friends will hold a party for Robin on Sunday following an author visit at 2:30 p.m. Anthony Sammarco, author of “The History of Howard Johnson?s: How A Soda Fountain Became an American Icon,” will discuss how a Nahant resident helped Howard Johnson build his empire by perfecting his 28 flavors of ice cream. For more information on Nahant Public Library events, check out the calendar at http://www.nahant.org/community/library.shtml#gpm1_7.
