Retired Saugus police officer struck working traffic detail

SAUGUS – A retired Saugus police officer was struck by a car this morning while working a traffic detail on Lincoln Avenue.Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said the 63-year-old retired officer was working a detail for a water project in the vicinity of 529 Lincoln Ave. when he was struck at about 7:47 a.m. by a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by a 35-year-old Danvers woman.The officer was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Giorgetti said. The extent of his injuries and circumstances of the accident were not disclosed.Neither the names of the officer or driver are being disclosed at this time. As of 10 a.m. the driver had not been charged. Giorgetti said the accident is under investigation.”Lincoln Avenue is one of our main thoroughfares,” Giorgetti said, noting there is heavy morning traffic in that area.Girogetti said it has been “a couple of years” since the last accident involving a detail officer and that retired officers are routinely assigned to traffic details.The Item and itemlive.com will report more details about the accident as they become available.
