Beverly boys soccer coach Kevin Leahy says it?s been difficult getting a handle on the Northeastern Conference power structure early in the season. That held true in the Panthers? 6-1 win against Swampscott Saturday as they roared to a 5-0 halftime lead, bouncing back from last Thursday?s loss to English.?This was a real solid win, although I thought this would be a much tighter game. We weren?t bummed after the loss to English because we thought we played pretty well,” Leahy said. “We kept pushing to the outside and tried to string their defense out a little bit and then we made some nice through passes.”Junior Ralph Ferrigno scored two goals and sophomore Peter Coletti and freshman Leo Feinstein both buried their first varsity goal. Alesio Kanani and Sean Curtin also scored as the Panthers improved to 3-2-0 overall.Leahy expects his club will have a better idea of where it stands in the big picture by week?s end following games against Revere, Peabody and Gloucester.St. John?s 3, B.C. High 1At Danvers, the unbeaten Prep (6-0-1) improved to 2-0 in the Catholic Conference, rallying for three unanswered goals after BC High broke a scoreless tie early in the second half.?This is a big win. After they scored we really elevated our play and took control. I think our depth wore them down,” said coach Dave Crowell.Junior Pat Foley sandwiched two goals around Greg French?s game-winner on a penalty kick awarded after a tripping foul in the box. Junior keeper Zach Rowell had seven saves for the win.The Prep kicks off a stretch of five consecutive road matches at Catholic Memorial Wednesday night.Cath. Mem. 3, Lynnfield 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers tumbled in this non-league tilt against a Catholic Conference foe. Emmanuel Kollie had the hat trick for CM. Senior center-back Trevor Cory turned in a strong showing for Lynnfield (1-4-1).?They were more physical and controlled the middle of the field, but I thought we played reasonably well and played hard for most of the game,” said coach Brent Munroe. In other action, Danvers (5-0-1) remained unbeaten with a solid 2-1 non-league win at Andover.GIRLS SOCCERLynnfield 1, Wayland 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers ran their record to 6-0 with a solid non-league win on a goal by Jackie Whelan at 8:52 of the first half. Whelan stole the ball from a Wayland defender and converted the breakaway.?It was certainly a back-and-forth game, although I thought we controlled play overall. The game was played mostly between the 18s but we moved the ball well,” said coach Mark Vermont.Lynnfield?s back line of Sam Filipe, Taylor Freitas, Abby Petras and Kelly Look excelled, supported by midfielders Paige MacEachern and Emily Scollard. Hannah Travers notched the shutout.Marblehead 8, Whittier 0At Whittier, the unbeaten Magicians (3-0-1) rode a six-goal second half to a lopsided non-league win. Junior Mia Bongiorno and sophomore Sarah Cullen both recorded hat tricks while sophomore Elice Joyce and freshman Lucy Poulin had single tallies in support of sophomore keeper Lauren Unterborn?s second shutout.?We made some quick adjustments at halftime. It?s a grass field, so we played in the air and had a great possession game in the second half,” said coach Andrew Bub.No. Andover 1, Beverly 0At Beverly, the Panthers (4-1-1) suffered their first loss on a North Andover goal with 15 minutes to play. Coach Kristin Simpson cited Deandra Crowley for her strong play in the back.FIELD HOCKEYSwampscott 5, Salem 0At Salem, senior Tori Thistle?s natural hat trick powered the Big Blue (2-2-1) to a convincing victory. Danielle Mayblyum had a goal and an assist, Aimee Aylward added a goal and Annie Kane and McKenzie Faulkner contributed assists.
