SWAMPSCOTT – They say when there?s smoke there?s fire, but it was not so Friday morning when firefighters responded for smoke at the railroad depot. Both Lynn and Swampscott crews arrived at the Swampscott depot around 10:30 a.m. to deal with light smoke coming from the base boards at the depot. Swampscott Fire Capt. Mark Ryan reported that Lynn Fire arrived first and used a booster line to douse possible flames, but there were no flames once Swampscott Fire arrived. As to the cause, Ryan said, “It appeared to be a cigarette thrown carelessly along the skirt boards of the building.”The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail trains were not stopped in the process, but Ryan said the MBTA was alerted to the incident so the trains could be more easily stopped if necessary.Crews cleared the scene at around 11 a.m.
