Roundup: Fenwick football wins, crucial two weeks coming up

Bishop Fenwick’s 42-20 defeat of Cardinal Spellman has set up a critical couple of weeks for the Crusaders.Friday, they host Austin Prep (7), another team that’s unbeaten in the Catholic Central League/Large, and to add perhaps a little emotion to the occasion, they are retiring record-holding rusher Bobby Tarr’s number. Then, the following Saturday, the Crusaders will be at Manning Field as St. Mary’s tries to derail them.At Brockton Saturday, Rufus Rushins rushed for 245 yards and two touchdowns as the Crusaders breezed past the host Cardinals. Fenwick (4-0) scored on their first drive on a 28-yard run by quarterback Nick Bona who also connected on touchdown passes to Eric Razney (26 yards) and James Traversey (11 yards). Tom Parsons added a 70-yard fumble return for a score for the Crusaders who host Austin Prep Friday.Winthrop 21, Salem 0At Salem, the visiting Vikings (3-1) played their most complete game of the season in a shutout victory over the Witches. Running back Jordan Corbett-Frank caught an 11-yard touchdown pass (from Dylan Driscoll) and rushed for over 100 yards, scoring on a 25-yard scamper. Driscoll (9-12, 91 yards) connected on another scoring pass with Vinny Sparacino from 17-yards out. The defense, led by Corbett-Frank (nine tackles, six assists) kept the Witches (0-4) offense in check.Boys SoccerLynnfield 1, Malden Cath. 0At Malden, the visiting Pioneers picked up their second win of the season in a shutout of the Lancers. Lucas Coehlo provided the game’s only goal about eight minutes into the opening half. Lynnfield goalkeeper Joe Bassi posted his second shutout of the season. The Pioneers (2-7-1) are back travel to North Reading tonight.Marblehead 2, Whittier 0At Whittier, the Magicians scored once in each half en route to a dominant road victory. Claudio Alverez scored the game-winner at about the midway point of the opening half. Will Gaddis added some insurance at the 70th minute. The Magicians defense was superb, holding the host’s without a shot all game long. Marblehead (3-2-4) plays again tonight at home against Classical.Peabody 2, Billerica 0At Billerica, the Tanners tallied once in each half, remaining undefeated on the season. Vinny Dessantos opened the scoring on an assist from Kenny Sawyer before Jake Silva converted on helpers from CJ Alimonti and Ben Manoogian. Peabody keeper Rob Smith made nine saves in his sixth shutout of the season. The Tanners (7-0-2, 6-0-2) play at Gloucester tonight.Wilmington 2, St. John’s 1At Wilmington, the visiting Eagles (9-1-1) surrendered two second half goals, leading to their first loss of the season. Paul Magazzu converted on a penalty kick to give the Prep a first half lead but the Wildcats answered. Zach Rowell made nine saves in the loss and didn’t have much of a chance on either goal. The Prep looks to rebound on Saturday at Xaverian.Field HockeySwampscott 5, Malden 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue scored four first half goals, routing the visiting Golden Tornados. Tori Thistle tallied twice for Swampscott who also got goals from Annie Kane and Victoria Himaras. Senior defenseman Nora Walker scored the first goal of her career in the win. The Big Blue (7-2-1) have won seven straight games and play next on Wednesday at Everett.Marblehead 1, Nantucket 0At Piper Field, Emily Mills scored five minutes into the game, with an assist from Suzanne McCarthy to lift the Magicians to a 7-4 record.
