October 8, 2013 by Matt Fraser

The Saugus boys soccer team struggled early on in the season, but seems to have found its footing as of late. Monday afternoon served as another confidence boost for the Sachems as they earned a 4-0 victory over visiting Manchester-Essex.The shutout was the second for Saugus in as many games, both by the same margin.?We have really tightened things up on the back end as of late,” explained Sachems coach Tom Duplisea. “I think a lot of it has to do with our confidence, which has been much higher as of late. We?re getting solid play all over the field.”Saugus led 1-0 at the half after Guilherme Barbosa ripped home a shot from 25 yards out following a downfield run and pass from Nick Dessalines (3 assists).?It was a beautifully developed play,” said Duplisea. “Nick used his speed to get to the outside and found Guilherme, who hit his spot in the upper corner.”Jorge Chiquillo increased the lead just a minute and a half into the second period after a misplay from the Manchester keeper on Oscar Alesksa through ball. Alekso Samardziz scored unassisted in the 45th minute. The Sachems? final goal came from Andre Ipojuca with about two minutes to play in the game. Owen Andruchow (15 saves) posted his second consecutive shutout.?Our defense played another great game and we got a fantastic game from Owen in net as well,” said Duplisea. “Hopefully we can keep up this momentum going forward.”Saugus improves to 3-5-2.Classical 4, Marblehead 0At Marblehead, Yabesi Musema scored twice for the visiting Rams while Strati Saranteas posted a shutout. Classical got a three-point day from Keregeya Nasibu (goal, 2 assists) while Wes Thomson added a tally. The Rams (6-5-1, 5-4-1) scored twice in each half while their defense, particularly Angel Canales, played strong.Fenwick 1, Arlington Cath. 1At Fenwick, the host Crusaders outshot the Cougars by a substantial margin (28-3) but had to settle for a draw after allowing the sloppy equalizer just 13 seconds into the second half. Iftimi Arapi scored the game?s first goal, assisted by Rishad DeSilva. Fenwick (4-5-5) plays next on Wednesday against Austin Prep.Swampscott 2, Salem 2At Swampscott, the Big Blue saw a win slip away when Salem?s Alejandro Smart scored the tying goal on a penalty kick with 43 seconds left. Swampscott had taken a 1-0 lead on Dan Woolhiser?s goal 14 minutes into the game, only to see Salem tie the game 12 minutes later on a Connor Duncan goal. Woolhiser scored again for a 2-1 Swampscott lead, but it didn?t hold up.Swampscott (2-6-2) had a solid game in net from Will Green, who had a couple of big saves on breakaways.Chelsea 3, Tech 0At Manning Field, the Tigers (5-5) had to face perennial Commonwealth Conference power Chelsea back-to-back, and they came up short both times. Tech plays Northeast Regional Wednesday.Beverly 4, Winthrop 2At Winthrop, the Panthers (6-5) got off to a slow start, scoring one goal in the first half, but picked up the pace in the final 40 minutes. Peter Coletti had two goals and Leo Feingold and Elias Cadena, one goal each. Graham Doherty had an excellent game in the midfield.Peabody 2, Gloucester 2At Gloucester, the Tanners led 2-0 with nine minutes remaining, but Gloucester spoiled the day with two late goals, one with about nine minutes left (Jeffrey Oliveri) and the other with four minutes remaining (Calvin Kuarte) that tied the game.Peabody?s first goal came in the first half from Ben Manoogian with Vinnie Dos Santos getting the assist. Kyle Gilbert scored 30 minutes into the second half (Manoogian assist).?With nine minutes left I think we thought as a team that the game was over,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “Lesson learned.”No. Reading 3, Lynnfield 0At North Reading, the game was scoreless at the half with North Reading scoring its final two goals late in the game.Lynnfield is 2-8-1.
