Before the Stone Tower Trail Run Challenge at Lynn Woods on Sunday, organizer Liam Brady took a moment to honor several individuals associated with cross country running at the Woods. They included Patsy Emberley, an ER nurse, and Lynn policeman Brian Chisholm, who were both at the finish line of the Boston Marathon when two bombs exploded this year.?They rushed in to help people who had lost limbs,” Brady said. “They were in a combat zone. They did what they could do. They?re the quietest, humblest, sweetest people. They never look for attention, and are always willing to help.”Brady also recognized the Woolfenden family of Salem. Amber Woolfenden was running the Marathon and did not get to finish due to the attacks. Her husband Stephen and their 4-year-old son Leo were both injured. Stephen Woolfenden lost a leg and Leo Woolfenden suffered shrapnel to his head.?I know it weighed on my heart for a long time,” Brady said of the Woolfendens? difficulties. In addition to honoring individuals affected by the Marathon attacks, Brady remembered Jim Logan of Salem, “a good friend of Lynn Woods,” who died of a heart attack last year.?He loved the Stone Tower trail race,” Brady said. “He always sent notes afterward. How could you not remember and love a guy like that??I had 200 people standing there, taking it all in, recognizing as a little community what happened. The sun was shining on us. It was beautiful at that moment. We are so lucky that we get to do something we love in one of the most beautiful places.”For the 5K and 15K races, there were approximately 210 pre-entries and around 60 post-entries. Brady called the turnout “phenomenal.” Both races included the landmark Stone Tower, which sits atop Burrill Hill, at 285 feet the highest point in Lynn. Runners in the 15K passed the tower three times, from three different directions. The top three finishers in the 15K were: Sean McDonough, Somerville (59:05); David Long, Beverly (59:28); and James Pawlicki of Lynn (1:00:40). The top three female finishers were: Jenn Brook, Gloucester (1:04:57, seventh); Jennifer Howland, Danvers (1:10:41, 15th) and Katia Bertoldi, Somerville (1:12:51, 27th).The top five finishers in the 5K were all from Lynn: Doug Wilson (21:47), Colin Harvey (24:48), Brendan Morris (24:51), Daniel Chick (25:07) and Eric Bowden (25:21). The top three female finishers were Kelley Palmer, Arlington (27:42, 13th); Alexandra Quiros, Lynn, 27:56 (14th) and Madeline McKie, Peabody (27:56, 15th).Brady thanked race volunteers, including Bill Mullen; Mike Fitzgerald; Mary Bruno; Dave Jefska of the North Face; and Wes Lassen of New England Running Company. A group of volunteers, including Brady, Mullen, Fitzgerald, Bruno and Chisholm, marked the race route on Saturday. Harrington Trophy and Extreme Silkscreen also helped out. There was even a bagpiper: Lynn policeman Edward “Ned” Shinnick.
