SAUGUS – The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks was praised last week after they announced a compromise with neighbors over operational hours and usage. The organization came under fire last month when neighbors opposed the amendment of its operational, alcohol and entertainment licenses to include the outdoor grove area. BPOE Treasurer Michael Zellen said since that Board of Selectmen meeting, the organization?s officer met with neighbors like Michael Provitola to walk the grounds and hear their concerns over noise. Zellen said he assured Provitola the late hours and loud music “would not be the case going forward.”At a meeting Oct. 8, Zellen and other officers appeared before selectmen again to extend the license to cover the grover area, with restrictions to appease neighbors. Going forward, the rental season will be set for May 15 through Oct. 15, with rentals allowed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the liquor license from noon to 6 p.m. Last call and the cutoff for playing music will be 5:30 p.m.Lodge officer Steve Doherty added that speakers would be aimed away from residences. “We?ve worked out what?s agreeable for everybody.”Provitola, who originally complained that the noise from the Elks was such that he could not hear his TV, said Elks officers provided him with numbers to call if he had further complaints, but if the noise continued he would take his complaints to the board again.Selectman Stephen Horlick commended Elks officers for appeasing the neighbors and advised them to keep the peace. “Try to work everything out,” he said. “If someone calls you and says the music is loud, take care of it right away so there?s no tension.”The board unanimously approved the amended hours and usage.
