WINTHROP – Behind the combined effort of a very talented running back corpse, Lynn Classical earned an impressive 38-12 road victory over Winthrop on Friday evening at Miller Field. The win gets Classical to the .500-mark at 3-3 (3-1 in the Northeastern Conference/Small).”We have some talented guys in our backfield who we feel comfortable with spreading the ball to,” explained Classical coach Tim Phelps. “It was a solid overall effort tonight with our offensive line playing well and our defense also.”The plethora of talent was evident from the very first drive as the Rams used three backs during a 10 play, 76 yard scoring drive. Justin Avery (9 yards), Devin Crayton (7) and Brad Scuzzarella (26) all saw touches before the latter pounded in a three yard touchdown as well as the conversion attempt. The Vikings answered right back with a lengthy drive of their own spanning 12 plays and 74 yards. The series concluded on the first play of the second quarter as quarterback Dylan Driscoll scored from a yard out before Reise Turransky’s conversion run failed.Classical responded with another run-heavy drive that ended on a one-yard score by Avery. Scuzzarella’s conversion scamper increased the lead to 10.The Rams forced a three and out on the ensuing drive and capitalized once more. After an 11-play, 57-yard march to the Vikings 12, Scuzzarella busted up the middle before bouncing to the left and into the end zone with 1:20 to play in the half. Crayton tacked on a conversion run to make it 24-6.Classical wasn’t finished however; as Scuzzarella recovered a Driscoll fumble with 45 seconds remaining.Crayton received three consecutive touches, the second a 14-yard run to set up an easy score from two-yards out. Quarterback Jordan Brown connected with Crayton on the conversion attempt to increase the Rams halftime lead to 26.”Classical is a good, physical football team and they killed us tonight, especially in the first half,” said Winthrop coach Sean Driscoll. “We came out strong in the third but their running game is tough to contain.”Winthrop (3-3) scored the only points of the third quarter on their opening drive as Jordan Corbett-Frank scored from three yards out. The Vikings recovered a Crayton fumble on the next drive, but turned the ball right back over after a Driscoll pass was deflected into the arms of Ernest Owoh (playing his first snap of the year).”Our defense did a good job in bailing us out after the bad turnover we made moments before,” said Phelps of the interception. “That was a big play for us.”The fourth quarter featured Scuzzarella’s third score of the contest, busting in from the goal line. This came on the heels of the Rams defense forcing a turnover on downs at the Vikings own 20-yard line.”That was a great win for us but like I told the guys, we need to stay humble and hungry,” said Phelps. “We have another two games (Revere and English) to focus on and then the playoffs.”
