Sox slam their way to American League pennant

BOSTON – Shane Victorino’s seventh-inning grand slam Saturday night propelled the Red Sox to their third American League pennant of the young century — and first since 2007 with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.The Red Sox captured the American League Championship Series in six games,The Red Sox came into the seventh inning trailing, 2-1. However, Jonny Gomes doubled to lead off the inning, barely missing a home run. After Stephen Drew struck out, Xander Boegarts walked on a 3-2 count, sending manager Jim Leyland out to lift starter Max Scherzer.Jacoby Ellsbury hit a grounder to short that Jose Iglesias bobbled, and everyone was safe. The Tigers brought Jose Veras in to pitch, and Victorino quickly fell behind 0-2 before launching one into the monster seats.The Red Sox bullpen,m as well as some bad Tiger baserunning, kept the game close before Koji Uehara came into nail down the save.
