LYNN – A city man agreed to be held without bail pending his trial for attempted murder after police said the man beat a woman on the head with a jewelry box and then tried to strangle her.The man also is a fugitive from New York on a case involving violence and has a pending case in Chelsea for an alleged violent incident, according to court documents.Jose L. Rodriguez, 30, of 1 Addison Ave., was arrested and charged with attempted murder; kidnapping; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; witness intimidation; and assault and battery.Rodriguez was arraigned on the charges Oct. 11, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. Judge Matthew Machera ordered Rodriguez held without bail on that date pending a dangerousness hearing, according to court documents.Police responded to the Addison Avenue address Oct. 11 after receiving a call from a female screaming for help, according to a report by Lynn Police Officer Sadrak Pierre.Officers approaching the address saw a man walking on the street and, meeting the alleged victim at the door, learned that the man was the suspect. Police stopped the man, identified as Rodriguez. The alleged victim told police Rodriguez was visiting and was supposed to return to New York the previous day. But the alleged victim said she returned home that evening to find Rodriguez asleep on the couch. The alleged victim told police Rodriguez woke her up early the next morning and demanded to borrow her car. She said she refused, and Rodriguez then began slapping her in the face and to “destroy her bedroom,” according to police.Police said Rodriguez hit the woman over her head with a jewelry box then grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around the house.”She stated to me that she tried to defend herself and started to hit him with anything she could get her hands on,” Pierre reported. “(Rodriguez) then placed his hand on her mouth and nose, and the other hand around her neck trying to strangle her. She stated to me that she started to lose consciousness as she tried to hit him to let go of her.”Rodriguez allegedly prevented the alleged victim from leaving the house or calling police. The alleged victim said the incident continued for at least two hours before she found her cell phone and called 911, police reported.Police did not detail any injuries to the alleged victim, according to the report, but officers noted clothing and jewelry all over the residence floor and a broken wooden jewelry box.Officers did note red marks on Rodriguez’s face and right forearm, however, according to a report by Lynn Police Officer John Harkness.Rodriguez told police he went to go to the bathroom during the night and the alleged victim woke up upset and telling him to leave.”When he said he would leave in a little while (the alleged victim) slapped him once in the face and then punched him once in the face,” Harkness reported. But Rodriguez changed his story about how he got the injury on his arm – first telling police the alleged victim had bit him, then that she grabbed his arm, and finally that the alleged victim hit him with a metal pole on the arm, according to police.Rodriguez stipulated to dangerousness at his hearing Tuesday in Lynn District Court, according to court documents. Judge Albert Conlon noted the police report detailing “a violent assault on a girlfriend with whom (the defendant) has a past history of such.” Conlon also noted Rodriguez is a fugitive from New York for a violent incident and has a pending violent charge in Chelsea. Conlon ruled no conditions of release could ensure the alleged victim’s safety and ordered Rodriguez held without bail pending trial.Rodriguez is scheduled to return to court Nov. 11.
