Roundup: Local cross country teams impress

Continuing a dramatic resurgence of the program, the St. Mary?s boys cross country team won the Catholic Central League meet at Franklin Park on Thursday.?It?s the first championship (for St. Mary?s) I know of,” coach Dom Finelli said.This is the third year of the program, which is back after an absence of about 10 years.The Spartans accumulated 40 points, two ahead of Cardinal Spellman.?I?ve just got a good group of kids,” Finelli said, adding that there are 41 players combined on the boys and girls teams. “That?s the key, trying to get numbers.”Sophomore Thomas Mackin of Lynn finished third overall, followed by sophomore Cody Murtagh of Peabody (6th), sophomore Matt McManus of Lynn (8th), freshman Mike Cerulli of Lynn (9th) and sophomore Liam Foley of Salem (14th). All achieved all-star status.In the girls meet, the Spartans finished fifth. Sarah Ryan finished 19th and Melissa LeFave was 25th. Both runners earned medals.In the boys JV race, Finn Lacy was fourth (12:47), Dmietri Finelli fifth (12:55) and Jackson Porter eighth (14:27). In the girls JV race, Colleen Osbahr was third (14:48) and Erin Powers sixth (16:19).Bishop Fenwick was fifth in the boys meet, getting good finishes from Eric Loehle (20th, 19:43); Matt Loehle (26th, 20:16) and Jim DiGiulio (32nd, 20:40).In the girls meet, Fenwick finished second. Arianna Maida won (20:01), and other standouts included Sydney Packard (7th, 21:00); Mary Pasquale (10th, 21:56); Meghan Clancy (18th, 23:11) and Sam Claveau (19th, 23:20).Micah Malala won the JV race (12:36).Meanwhile, at Lynn Woods, the KIPP Academy cross country team ran against eight other squads: Salem Academy, City on a Hill, Prospect Hill, Boston Collegiate, Community Charter, Pioneer Charter, Foxborough and South Shore.This was the first time KIPP ran at Lynn Woods, which is now its home course.?I thought it was great,” KIPP coach Zach Lindemann said. “Cross country is a great sport in general. It?s a nice, relaxing time (but also a) competitive atmosphere.”Edivan Solano was the top male finisher for KIPP (21:23) on the 3-mile course and Anaidys Uribe was the top female finisher for KIPP (23:27).BOYS SOCCERSt. Mary?s 4, Arlington Catholic 0At Manning Field, the Spartans (8-4-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Leading the way for St. Mary?s was Cristian Chavez (2 goals, assist). Noah Camelo also helped out (goal, assist). St. Mary?s freshman Josh Bertrand scored a goal as well.Greater Lowell 2, Tech 0At Greater Lowell, the Tigers (7-8-1) were down 2-0 in a blink and couldn?t rally. Tech goalie Carlos Perez had a solid performance after the fast start by Greater Lowell. Erick Imul moved back to sweeper for the Tigers and had a strong game.St. John?s 5, Everett 1At St. John?s, the Eagles (13-2-2) received a monster performance from senior Matt Chilton, as he scored the first four goals for St. John?s, including a second-half hat trick. He has now accumulated 14 goals this season. Paul Magazzu chipped in a goal for the Eagles. Aiden Robinson and Justin Blanch both had solid showings at midfield for St. John?s.Revere 3, Beverly 1At Beverly, the Panthers (10-7-1) were down 1-0 early in the first half. Beverly tied the game with 10 minutes remaining in the half, when Elias Crandell scored. The score remained tied at the end of the half. The Patriots outscored Beverly 2-0 in the second half.Beverly midfielders Ryan Santo and Elesio Kanani had good games.GIRLS SOCCERTech 0, Northeast 0At Manning Field, the Tigers (2-11-4) were well represented on senior night with Kathy Orellana, Julissa Delon and Vilma Cabrera. Tech had several chances to score but could not find the back of the net.?We played a great game today,” Tech coach Jeremy McKeen said. “All the girls played really well today.
