Sox will do what they’ve done all year … regroup and keep competing

Steve Krause

October 25, 2013 by Steve Krause

BOSTON – It isn?t as if the Boston Red Sox haven?t been in this predicament before. After Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, and seven innings into Game 2, they seemed on their way to a quick exit from the post-season.Then, they turned it around in the eighth inning and went onto win the American League pennant.Thursday, they seemed poised to roll into St. Louis up two games to none over the Cardinals before things disintegrated, resulting in a 4-2 defeat. Now, they go to Busch Stadium tied 1-1 and with what could be seen as a deflating loss dogging them for two days. But if you think they?re going to feel sorry for themselves, forget it. That seemed to be the sentiment after Thursday?s game.?We?re going to lick our wounds,” said left fielder Jonny Gomes, whose just-off-the-mark throw couldn?t nail Pete Kozma at the plate on Matt Carpenter?s sacrifice fly in the Cards? three-run seventh. “And then we?ll regroup and go at it again.”The play set off a chain reaction of bad. Saltalamacchia couldn?t hold onto the throw, allowing John Jay, who had singled and gone to second on a walk to Daniel Descalso, to take third. And Jay scored on the same play, when relief pitcher Craig Breslow threw the ball away trying to get Descalso at third.?We?re human,” said Saltalamacchia. “It happens. It?s the real world We just have to turn the page.?It happens,” he said. “We saw (the Cardinals) do the same thing last night and they turned the page tonight. We will too.”The Red Sox have been able to absorb these defeats all season and come out the next night like nothing happened. After losing Game 3 in Tampa Bay during the ALDS, they came back and closed the Rays out the next night. After losing Game 4 to the Tigers in the ALCS, they won a gritty 4-3 game go up 3-2 in the series and then came from behind to close out the Tigers two nights later.?With what our guys have proven over the long haul, we?re looking forward to the challenge of going into what should be a great environment over in St. Louis. Looking forward to Jake (Peavy) taking them on in Game 3, and continuing to pace our way from the mound.”Nobody expected a sweep.?We didn?t,” said Gomes. “So in that sense, it (being tied 1-1) is not surprising.”And, says Farrell, “the team has responded well to challenges on the road or at home. I know that we?ll be ready to go over there.”David Ortiz, who has hit two homers in the first two games (and almost hit a third were it not for a great catch by Carlos Beltran) will get the nod, with Mike Napoli in pinch-hit mode.?The only other thing we could possibly do with Mike is put him behind the plate, and I guess there?s been talk of that,” said Farrell. “But we?re not going to do that.”As it stands now, Peavy will start Game 3 with Clay Buccholz, who is bothered by stiffness in his right shoulder, penciled in for the fourth game. The only other change Farrell has kicked around is that with more ground to cover in cavernous left field at Busch Stadium, Daniel Nava will most likely get a start.
