Roundup: Area cross country teams excel

Swampscott?s Matt Mahoney claimed the individual crown while Peabody placed all five scorers in the Top 10 to capture the boys team title at the Northeastern Conference Cross Country Championship Saturday morning at Bradley Palmer State Park.A similar scenario played out on the girls side. Catalina Dominick of Danvers won the individual championship and Peabody placed five runners in the Top 15 to squeeze past Beverly for the team championship.NEC BOYSMahoney finished in a time of 15:38, 30 seconds better than Peabody?s Drew Fossa in second place.Ben Braz (5th, 16:35), Marcelo Rocha (6th, 16:38), Riley Dowd (9th, 16:52) and Alex Greco (10th, 16:53) joined Fossa in the Top 10 as the Tanners finished 23 points ahead of runner-up Marblehead. Richie Fournier finished 11th and Cody Jordan placed 15th for Peabody, although they didn?t factor into the scoring.Marblehead was very nearly as impressive as it placed seven runners in the Top 20, paced by A.J. Ernst (3rd, 16:33) and Chris Rodts (7th, 16:42). Also scoring were Conrad Rousseau (12th, 17:12), Adam Linsky (16th, 17:25) and Jared Kokinos (17th, 17:30). Nick Carr (17:36) and Hillman Hollister (17:48) were 18th and 20th, respectively.Fourth-place Beverly (114 points) received strong efforts from Campbell Wood (8th, 14:44), Brian McPherson (19th, 17:44), Anthony Morrissey (26th, 18:31), Zach Bauer (29th, 18:39) and Charlie Boschen (32nd).Danvers (153 points) placed fifth behind James Bailey (13th, 17:14) and Kevin Hebert (24th, 18:14). Joining Mahoney in the Top 25 for sixth-place Swampscott (157 points) were Noah Conti (22nd, 18:06) and Robert McLaughlin (25th, 18:17).English (182 points) locked down seventh behind Tyler Comer (23rd, 18:07) and Emmanual Ezemba (27th, 18:35). Five Salem runners – Anand Patel, Danny Nguyen, Guthrie Scrimgeour, Kevin Clyne and Shawn Small – bunched between 38th and 48th place, good for 216 points and eighth place.John Dello Russo (28th, 18:37) posted Revere?s best finish while Eric Macorri (46th) turned in Classical?s best effort.NEC GIRLSDanvers? Dominick cruised to the win in 18:20, a 6:04 pace that created a 33-second gap on second-place Janaya Randall of Marblehead.The team battle saw Peabody (43 points) edge Beverly (49) behind the group of Sam Allen (5th, 19:25), Lauren Barrett (7th, 19:44), Antonia Pagliuca (8th, 19:46), Sydney May (10th, 20:09) and Julia Merchant (13th, 20:46). The Beverly pack of Abby Walsh (3rd, 19:00), Nicole Demars (4th, 19:04), Julianna Wesley (9th, 19:55), Maeve Monahan (15th, 20:49) and Keely Higgins (18th, 21:04) was nearly as tight.Joining Randall to help Marblehead (51 points) forge a third-place finish were Lily Roberts (6th, 19:28), Sarah Oliver (11th, 20:14), Paige Ferrucci (12th, 20:36) and Anna Barrell (20th, 21:13).Jessica Driscoll (23rd, 21:38) and Alison Barker (25th, 21:50) supplemented race winner Dominick for fourth-place Danvers. Isabella Kornitsky (21st, 21:20), Sarah Kelley (27th, 22:01) and Alyssa Mauriello (28th, 22:09) cracked the Top 30 for fifth-place Swampscott.Revere?s Nikki Nelson placed 16th in 20:50, Kathy Le ran 44th for Salem, and Amina Babic crossed 47th for Classical.CAPE ANN LEAGUEBOYSAlso at Bradley Palmer, Lynnfield finished 10th and Saugus 11th, Saturday afternoon. Chase Davidson (36th), Tim Rice (40th) and Alex Dalelio (58th) paced the Pioneers. Evan Covell (32nd), Nick Monaco (38th) and Mike Mansfield (52nd) were the top finishers for the Sachems. Masconomet won the championship.GIRLSLynnfield placed eighth behind Tia Patterson (11th), Christina Irrera (35th), Leena Aurora (41st), Ellen Welter (51st) and Meghan Breslow (61st).BOYS SOCCERSt. John?s 0, Acton-Box 0At Acton, neither team could find the back of the net in a well-played contest.
