Cuffe of Lynn and posthumously to her husband Walter Cuffe. The annual award recognizes “outstanding contributions to Salem State through activities with the alumni association.”Sally and Walter each earned two degrees from the university and each delivered over 50 years of volunteer service to their alma mater. They served on the alumni association board of directors, the foundation board and numerous other alumni committees, including the class of 1962 reunion committee. Walter’s sudden passing shortly before the couple’s 50th reunion celebration prompted their classmates to honor them by naming the Walter A. Cuffe Jr. and Sally A. Cuffe Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund to provide financial support to education majors in good academic standing.Salem State alumna Josephine Kennedy, a member of the alumni association board of directors and a long-time friend of the Cuffes, said, “Walter and Sally realized the importance of giving and, to further the cause, encouraged other graduates to do the same. They maintained that it was their solid college education that gave them the security and confidence to go out into the world.”According to Mandy Ray, director for alumni affairs at Salem State, “It was a privilege to know Walter and the Salem State community misses him deeply. Sally continues to be a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer and is a valued member of the Salem State family.”In 1976, Walter and Sally opened the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home on Maple Street in Lynn where they raised their three daughters. A Salem State University scholarship fund and a classroom are dedicated and named in honor of the Cuffe family.
