REVERE – A man whom Revere Police apprehended in a swamp after an alleged armed robbery was sentenced to 18 years in jail in Rhode Island after evidence recovered from the chase connected the suspect to a shooting.Marcus Lopes, of Pawtucket, R.I., was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon in a dwelling; discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime; and conspiracy to commit assault; in Rhode Island Superior Court, according to Amy Kempe, a spokesperson for Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. On Oct. 15, Rhode Island Superior Court Judge Robert Krause sentenced Lopes to serve 18 years in jail for the assault charge, according to Kempe. Lopes received a 20-year suspended sentence with probation on the gun charge and a 10-year suspended sentence on the conspiracy charge, Kempe said.Revere Police responded on Nov. 28, 2012 to a report of two men robbing a man at gunpoint at Taft Street and Broadway. The alleged victim pointed out the suspects as they walked down Taft Street, and an officer chased the men to Revere Beach Parkway where the men ran into the marsh.Revere, Chelsea and State Police flushed Lopes and Angelo Pina, of Boston, from the swamp and arrested the suspects.Lopes allegedly gave police false information, however. Only until booking did Revere officers learn Lopes was wanted for an assault-to-murder charge in Rhode Island.Lopes was convicted of shooting a man multiple times during a confrontation with a group of men in Pawtucket, R.I., on Nov. 6, 2012. Revere Police announced Tuesday that they received a letter from Kilmartin and Pawtucket Police thanking the department for recovering a backpack in the marsh that connected Lopes to the Nov. 6 shooting.
