SAUGUS – An unidentified man called and threatened a Saugus Kmart manager that if he did not receive the merchandise he demanded, he would blow up the store, according to police.Saugus Police Assistant Chief Ronald Giorgetti reported at 6:40 p.m. Friday that the town?s police and fire departments were investigating a “suspicious article” in the Main Street store, which was evacuated by the store?s management. Working with state specialized units and Revere Police to search the interior of the store, the threat was determined to be unfounded, with no article in the store, said Giorgetti.Store Service Desk Associate Robby Feliciano said he took a call at 5:30 p.m. from a man who asked to speak to the manager. Feliciano said 15 minutes after he transferred the call, the store was being evacuated.Giorgetti said other area Kmarts received the same threats, and though he could not confirm which ones, he said Saugus Police would be identifying where else there were threats and coordinating with the other communities to find the unidentified man who made the threats.State Police Trooper Todd Nolan confirmed that a number of Kmart stores in the Greater Boston area had received threats. He confirmed Somerville had received a threat and Lowell, in addition to Saugus, had made a request for bomb dogs.Braintree and Milford Police tweeted that Kmart stores in their communities had also received bomb threats.Giorgetti said police would be seeking criminal charges once they identify the individual.Police, fire and ambulance vehicles began clearing the Saugus scene around 8 p.m.
