Football: Many local teams conclude main part of schedule this weekend

Steve Krause

November 14, 2013 by Steve Krause

This weekend, the main part of the high school football season comes to a close, with, once again, three of Lynn?s four teams playing their final games until Thanksgiving.Only Bishop Fenwick (Friday) and Marblehead (Saturday) have a chance to progress beyond this weekend to state semifinal games (in Divisions 5 North and 3 Northeast, respectively). The rest of the teams will have a long break until Thanksgiving.Friday?s games are:English at CambridgeAt Russell Field (7), the Falcons came to Manning Field Friday night and lost to Classical. The Bulldogs will try to win their third game of the season before their annual clash with the Rams.Classical at North AndoverAt North Andover, the Rams will try to clinch a winning season against the Scarlet Knights, who defeated English last week at home. Classical is 5-4 with two games to go.Greater Lowell at St. Mary?sAt Manning Field (6), like the Rams, the Spartans (5-4) can clinch a winning season with a victory over the Gryphons. They play Tech the night before Thanksgiving.St. Mary?s defeated Whittier last week at Manning.Lawrence at PeabodyAt Lee Field (7), the Tanners have a shot at a five-win season if they can score victories over Lawrence and Saugus on Thanksgiving. In their first season under coach Mark Bettencourt, the Tanners entered the season trying to rebound from an 0-11 season in 2012.Lynnfield at WatertownAt Watertown (7), the Pioneers will try to assuage their disappointment after last week?s 14-7 loss to Bedford that knocked them out of the MIAA playoffs. It was their first loss of the season.Watertown, from the Middlesex League/Freedom Division, is 5-4 heading into Friday?s game.Gloucester at MasconometAt Masco (7), the Chieftains defeated the Fishermen handily earlier this season, 27-0. They defeated Danvers in the week of the Division 3 Northeast playoffs, and then fell last Friday to Marblehead. The Fishermen beat Beverly two weeks ago, and then lost last week to Tewksbury.Medford at RevereAt DellaRusso Stadium (7), what has been a trying season for the Patriots could be made more bearable with a win over the Mustangs in this rematch. Medford and Revere opened their season with a Mustang win at Hormel Stadium.St. John?s at MethuenAt Methuen (7), the Eagles, after being bounced by Lowell two weeks ago, rebounded with a victory over the Greater Boston League?s Malden last week.A win would guarantee the Prep a winning season (it came into the game 5-4).Dracut at SalemAt Bertram Field (7), dress rehearsal No. 2 for the grand Thanksgiving Day opener against Beverly takes place Friday night at the refurbished field. Last week, the Witches fell to Boston Latin, 21-7.Winthrop at AmesburyAt Amesbury (7), the Vikings rebounded from a bad loss to North Reading two weeks ago with a home win over Weston last week (a 29-27 nail-biter). Winthrop needs wins this week and on Thanksgiving over Revere to finish with a winning record.
