November 18, 2013 by Rich Tenorio

The West Lynn Pop Warner A squad defeated the Boston Bengals, 30-0, to reach the regional finals on Saturday.?It was over early,” coach Maurice Cordy said. “They communicated well. They always do. They know the game plan.?We usually are always prepared for teams. I or someone else will go out and film the teams we?re playing.”West Lynn got touchdowns from Cody Mullins (40 yards), Jonathan D?Oleo (1-yard run and 60-yard punt return) and Tony Garcia (12 yards). It was 30-0 after one quarter.West Lynn moves on to face the Hyde Park Cowboys at Mass. Maritime next weekend.Cordy said that against the Bengals, his team particularly excelled on defense.?We did not even give up a first down,” he said. “We were on top of our game.”Before the game, assistant coach Scott Thompson brought the team new uniforms, adding a bit of a boost.?We were fired up and ready to go,” Cordy said. There are 21 players on the team, and they range in age from 13 to 15 years old.Three players have been with the team since they were eight or nine years old, Cordy said: Alfonso and Alonzo Robinson, whose aunt is league president Amy Robinson; and Tyshawn Anderson. The other players have joined the team in the last three or four years, the coach said.If West Lynn wins next weekend, it will go on to Florida. It would be Cordy?s fourth Florida trip in five years as a head coach (2009 with the B squad and 2011-12 with the A squad).Mullins, Anderson, Douglas Guevara and D?Oleo were all on the Florida team last year, as were the coaches on Robinson?s staff, Thompson and Paul Beath.?We?re a ground and pound team,” Cordy said of this year?s squad. “We run the ball. There?s a lot of stuff we haven?t done yet.”He added that in a previous 34-6 win over the South End, West Lynn ran “two formations and 2-3 plays.?Next week, (we face) the best team we?ll play. All hands on deck.”
