LYNN – A judge ordered a Mattapan man held without bail after police said the man fled across Route 1 after allegedly strangling and beating a woman at a local hotel room.”He then crossed over three lanes and was running in the right lane still north in the southbound lanes,” Saugus Police Officer Daniel Wing reported. “Vehicles were slowing and changing lanes at a rapid pace to avoid hitting (the defendant), who was creating a substantial risk of bodily injury to officers, himself and the motorists.”Anderson DeBerry, 21, of 16 Mattapan St. #1, Mattapan, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; assault and battery; threat to commit crime; resisting arrest; and disorderly conduct; at 1:58 a.m. Sunday.DeBerry was arraigned on the charges in Lynn District Court Monday where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.Police responded to the Holiday Inn on Route 1 at 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of an unwanted man in a hotel room, according to a report by Saugus Police Sgt. Kevin Cabral. Police said it was the second call they received that evening regarding a disturbance at the room, according to the report. But officers had been unable to locate a suspect earlier, police said.Police arriving for the second call reported meeting two women who told officers a black man in a dark-colored hoodie was possibly drunk and walking on the highway towards CVS.The suspect fled allegedly on seeing officers. Some officers pursued the suspect – later identified as DeBerry – on foot, while officers in cruisers tried to stop or slow area vehicles, according to police.Officers reportedly arrested DeBerry after a brief chase.A woman staying at the hotel, meanwhile, told officers DeBerry was visiting her but became enraged when she objected to DeBerry bringing another woman over, according to police.”DeBerry became enraged and started to choke her to the point of her passing out,” police said. “She awoke to him on top of her punching her in the face, threatening to kill her.”DeBerry also allegedly hit the woman in the head with a liquor bottle and then allegedly blocked the door so she could not leave the room. The alleged victim told officers she was able to escape when a hotel worker came to the room. Police noted the alleged victim had bruises consistent with her statement, but could not find a liquor bottle.Police also noted DeBerry had outstanding warrants on a 2012 assault-and-battery case and a 2013 case with multiple aggravated-rape and assault-and-battery charges, according to police.Judge James LaMothe accepted the Commonwealth’s request and ordered DeBerry held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday. An attorney appointed to represent DeBerry could not be reached Tuesday evening.
