SAUGUS – As far as nifty sports names go, one player at Stackpole Field Thursday hit the jackpot:Justin Winn. The shifty signal caller with the storybook moniker led Saugus to a 25-14 Thanksgiving Day victory over neighboring Peabody in several ways, running for two touchdowns and throwing for another.Winn, a junior co-captain, used the option to mystify the Tanners? defense, repeatedly keeping the ball on key downs and accounting for 163 yards on just 12 carries.Winn recorded touchdown runs of 88 and 49 yards. His 88-yard score in the first series after the half bailed Saugus out after a block-in-the-back penalty had pushed the Sachems farther back toward their own goal line. Winn faked the hand-off, bolted through the center of the defensive line, veered left and had a clean trip to the end zone.Asked about his big 88-yard run, the 5-8, 165-pound Winn said, “I was just running my butt off, running, and running… It was a big play for us and really got us going.”His second score, a 49-yard scamper on another keeper, all but shut the door on Peabody, making the score 25-6 with 6:36 left in the game.Winn also connected with freshman running back Marcus Atkins for another score on a 45-yard screen pass just before the half. Winn, who said he checks off the plays at the line of scrimmage depending on the defensive alignment, had gotten the play from coach Mike Broderick during a timeout several plays previous and credited his teammates.?Coach made the call and we just executed great,” Winn said.Broderick was all smiles after the game and lauded his junior quarterback. “He?s a tremendous leader,” Broderick said. “And he?s coming back too. That really gives us something to look forward too.”
