Police: Pair arrested had 50 pounds of pot in car

LYNN – A Waltham man and a Dorchester man are out on $15,000 and $20,000 bail, respectively, after a state trooper pulled them over for an unregistered vehicle and found 50 pounds of marijuana in the car’s trunk.”During the inventory of the BMW, I opened the trunk,” Trooper James Farrell wrote in a report. “I immediately observed what I believed to be a large bale wrapped in plastic that I believed to be marijuana.”Jason Hunter, 37, of 764 Trapelo Road, Waltham, was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana; and conspiracy to violate drug laws; at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.Colin Walton, 36, of 16 Wentworth St. #3, Dorchester, was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana; conspiracy to violate drug laws; and an unregistered motor vehicle; at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.The men were arraigned Thursday in Lynn District Court where pleas of not guilty were entered on each defendant’s behalf, according to court documents.A trooper on Western Avenue Wednesday afternoon reported running a registration check on a black BMW that passed and finding the registration had been canceled Nov. 4.The trooper stopped the car and informed the car’s occupants – identified as the defendants – the vehicle was unregistered and would be towed, according to police. Walton allegedly said the car belonged to his wife.Police doing an inventory of the vehicle prior to the tow found two bales of marijuana weighing more than 50 pounds in total, according to court documents. A trooper also reported seeing Walton destroy a cell phone he was carrying.Essex Assistant District Attorney Andrew Boyd requested $100,000 cash bail for each defendant, according to court documents. He also requested that Walton’s bail on pending assault-and-battery and resisting arrest charges be revoked, according to court documents.Judge Ellen Flatley noted each defendant had posted $10,000 cash bail after being booked and ordered an additional $5,000 cash bail for Hunter and $10,000 cash bail for Walton, according to court documents.Each defendant posted the additional bail amount Thursday afternoon and are scheduled to return to court Jan. 2, according to court documents.
