LYNN – Mayors from Lynn, Revere and Salem and Chelsea and Saugus officials called a Suffolk Downs casino a regional job-creating engine Monday and said they hope the state Gaming Commission will advance the proposal.
“This all hinges on a vote to go forward which we anticipate getting tomorrow,” Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo told 60 people gathered in Lynn City Hall to support the casino plan.
The five-member commission is months away from granting up to three casino gambling licenses statewide, but it meets at 1 p.m. Tuesday to decide if a casino built only in Revere should receive additional, more detailed review.
Suffolk Downs and Mohegan Sun executives want to spend $1 billion building a casino on the portion of the track located in Revere. Neighboring East Boston residents voted down a Suffolk casino on Nov. 5, but Revere voters approved it by a 2 to 1 margin.”Revere said ?yes’ to 2,500 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent jobs. They said ?yes’ because of the money that will be spent in small local businesses,” said Revere Chamber of Commerce President Robert Upton.
