LYNN – A Mattapan man suspected in a beating at a local hotel and who police chased across Route 1 was found dangerous and ordered held until trial.Anderson DeBerry, 21, of 16 Mattapan St. #1, Mattapan, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; assault and battery; threat to commit crime; resisting arrest; and disorderly conduct. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.DeBerry also had outstanding warrants on a 2012 assault-and-battery case and a 2013 case with multiple aggravated-rape and assault-and-battery charges, according to police.Essex Assistant District Attorney Danielle Doherty-Wirwicz requested at a dangerousness hearing Tuesday that DeBerry be held until trial. She said DeBerry hit the alleged victim in the face with a liquor bottle and strangled the victim to the point of her losing consciousness. She also noted the alleged victim only agreed to speak with police after being assured DeBerry was in custody.Defense attorney Mark Schmidt said some bail was appropriate due to DeBerry’s record. But Schmidt said his client was drunk at the time and would likely be held when transferred to other courts to answer on the warrant charges. Schmidt asked for a cash bail DeBerry could post in order to go answer the warrant charges as well as conditions of release, including that DeBerry remain drug and alcohol free with random testing.Judge Ellen Flatley noted DeBerry was lucky he didn’t seriously harm himself or officers running into Route 1 and ruled that there were no conditions of release that could ensure the safety of the alleged victim and the community.DeBerry is scheduled to return to court Jan. 2.
