Two of the city?s most revered names in high school sports will be remembered again this weekend when the basketball teams play in the Elmo Benedetto (boys) and Paul Duchane (girls) jamborees.First up is the Benedetto Friday night at English. The Duchane jamboree has been a fixture at Classical on Saturday afternoons and evenings since 1989, when Duchane, a popular teacher and coach at both English and Classical, died.The Benedetto jamboree is in its 28th year, having begun in 1985, at the behest of former English basketball/baseball coach Ron Bennett, the same year the former citywide athletic director died.Benedetto, who has one of the five Agganis Hall of Fame awards named after him (given to the person who contributes the most to youth athletics in and around Lynn), worked tirelessly on behalf of Lynn?s high school students, and his motto was “there?s a college for everyone.”This year?s tournament begins at the Cavanagh Fieldhouse at English at 4:15 with Winthrop playing Peabody. The rest of the schedule is as follows: Marblehead vs. Greater Lowell (4:50); Swampscott vs. Greater Lowell (correct) (5:25); Salem vs. Fenwick (6); St. Mary?s vs. Beverly (6:30); Everett vs. Classical (7:05) and St. John?s vs. English (7:40).The cost is $5 and there will be no passes.Duchane taught science and physical education at both Classical and English. He was the head football coach at English from 1980 through 1986 before becoming an assistant at both Matignon and Bishop Fenwick.He died of a heart attack during halftime of the Fenwick-Matignon game at Donaldson Field in Peabody in 1989.The Duchane jamboree begins at 2 p.m., and teams will play two eight-minute periods.
