Roundup: Classical girls track stuns Gloucester

The Classical High girls track team got its season off to a great start with a 45-41 win over Gloucester Friday at Lynn Tech.Coach Steve Martin said one of the keys in the win was the performance of several of his freshmen who he didn’t expect to have an impact this early in the season.”We had a couple of freshmen really come up big,” coach Steve Martin said, adding this was a big win for the team.The meet was won in the relay with the foursome of Anna Wargo, Jen Gaudet, Rebecca Potter and freshman Devyn Astuccio running a 4:44.8. Classical swept the 50 dash led by Wargo (6.7). Michelle Scuzzarella took second and Tiana Evelyn, third. Astuccio won the 50 hurdles with fellow freshman Emma DeJoie snagging third.The veteran combo of Jen Gaudet and Rebecca Potter went one-two in the 300 meters with Gaudet record a 47.9. Jen Ierardi took second in the 1,000 (341) and Taylor Ferraro, second in the mile (6:51). Madinso Angelli took third. Fotini Ferraro’s first in the shot put (27-8) was also clutch as was Zoe Raymond’s third in the high jump.In other action, Swampscott defeated Revere, 47, Revere 36BOYS TRACKGloucester 73, Classical 7At Lynn, the Rams had a rough outing but there were a few bright spots. Thomas Mackin took third in the mile (5:33). Also take third in their respective events with Trey Burris in the shot put, Elias Gervacio in the 50-yard hurdles, Alex Pedro in the 50, Michael Royce in the 300, Jonathan Benavides in the 600 and Edward Peguero in the 1,000.Swampscott 52, Revere 34At Swampscott, the Big Blue had wins from Justin Chasse, shot put (44-3); Colman Donovan, 55-meter hurdles (8.9); Marco Solbelli, 300 meters (39.6); Noah Conti, 600 (1:29.1); Bennett Smith, 1,000 (2:57); Jack Dennehy, mile 95:22) and Matt Mahoney, 2-mile (10:28).BOYS BASKETBALLMystic Valley 46, Tech 43The Tech boys basketball team saw one slip away in a 46-43 loss to Mystic Valley Friday at Malden.The Tigers were up by five points with 1 1/2 minutes left, but a couple of crucial turnovers opened the door for Mystic Valley to come back with some help from a few well-placed threes. Tech had 18 turnovers total with four in the final four possessions.”We had some first game jitters. We made a few mistakes down the stretch,” coach Marvin Avery.Odell Tiggs had 17 points for Tech. Michael Anaya contributed 12 and Shaiheen Mazil, six.Pentucket 42, Saugus 40At West Newbury, this one came down to the wire. Pentucket,leading 42-40 with 6.7 seconds remaining, missed two free throws. Saugus got the rebound and Joe Bertrand got off a three-point shot that didn’t fall.Bertrand topped the ticket with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Sachems are 0-1.Bedford 67, Revere 62At Bedford, the Patriots led by nine points after the first quarter, but foul troubled put four starters on the bench for the second quarter, allowing Bedford to get back into the hunt. It was a dog fight the rest of the way.Mike Ciambelli had 17 points for Revere with Ravi Ryland and Doug Zingali each chipping in with nine.GIRLS BASKETBALLPentucket 70, Saugus 43At West Newbury, Norma Waggett had 23 points for the Sachems, but the perennially tough Pentucket Sachems proved tough to stop. Pentucket led 41-16 at the half. Saugus is 0-2.Mystic Valley 64, Tech 23At Tech, the Tigers (0-3) had a strong games from Zulmary Gonzalez 912 points) and Lia Nieves (6 points). This was Tech’s third game. First-year coach Kaitlyn Wechsler said the team has been making progress since its opening loss against KIPP Academy. Tech dropped its second game to Dedham.St. Mary’s 81, Matignon 20At St. Mary’s, the Spartans opened their season with seniors Briana Rudolph (22 points), Sharrell Sanders (14) and Jennie Mucciarione (11) leading the way.Spartan coach Jeff Newhall said everyone played, and that he was impressed with freshmen Mia Nowicki (13 points) and Temi Felayi (6 steals, 9 rebounds, 8 points).Newton No. 55, KIPP 35At East Boston in the Larry Nance Holiday Tipoff, Alex Huffman scored 18 points for the Panth
