This is the second in a series of articles by The Daily Item staff examining the events of 2013 and how they might affect the news in 2014. To see Thursday’s story on how news out of Revere will affect the region, go to www.itemlive.com.The calendar year may be drawing to a close, but for many of the notable and tragic incidents on the police page this year, the story will continue into 2014.Lynn had three murders this year, and in each of the cases, the alleged suspect or suspects have been arrested, charged and have cases proceeding through the courts. Each of the alleged murders also arise from domestic incidents.Police responded early July 8 to the Western Avenue apartment shared by Anthony Gideika, 32, and Jennifer Nelson, 34, and found 3-month-old Chase Gideika bruised and not breathing.Doctors testified to the grand jury that the infant had “catastrophic head trauma” from “multiple episodes of violence.” These included being shaken violently and slammed within the previous 24 to 48 hours Gideika was caring for the child and his twin brother while Nelson attended a tattoo party, according to prosecutors.Gideika has been indicted in Essex Superior Court for murder; and assault and battery on a child resulting in serious bodily injury. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Jan. 13.Nelson has also been indicted on charges of permitting assault and battery on a child resulting in serious bodily injury; misleading a police officer; and wanton and reckless endangerment of a child. She pleaded not guilty to the charges at her arraignment in December and is scheduled to return to court Jan. 10.Nancy A. Baker, 69, was charged with murder; and two counts of animal cruelty; after police responded to the Jefferson Street house where she lived with her father, Donald Baker, 89, and found him and two dogs stabbed to death. Nancy Baker allegedly confessed she “went crazy” and stabbed her father and dogs and then tried to commit suicide. She has been held in a state psychiatric facility since and is scheduled to return to court on June 23.Isaac Hendricks, 32, was ordered held without bail on a charge of murder Monday, after he allegedly stabbed Jonathan Laporte, 26, of Dedham, after Laporte and his girlfriend came to Hendricks’ home and a fight over a pair of children’s sneakers became physical.Kheysha Torres, Laporte’s girlfriend, was held on $10,000 cash and house arrest for charges of assault with a dangerous weapon; and malicious destruction of property. Hendricks and Torres are scheduled to return to Lynn District Court court Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, respectively. There were several fatal and tragic motor vehicle accidents in the area this year as in last year, and prosecutors have filed charges in some cases that will continue into 2014 in Lynn District Court.Angela Okonkwo, 37, remains charged with motor-vehicle homicide by negligent operation; and a crosswalk violation; in a September 2012 accident that killed 20-year-old Dillon McManus and seriously injured his twin brother, Riley McManus. Her trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 3.Milan Zilic is scheduled to return to court on Jan 15., where he faces charges of motor vehicle homicide by reckless or negligent operation; manslaughter; and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.Zilic was the driver of a 1998 Honda Odyssey that fatally struck Kathleen McPartland, 60, of Lynn, on July 21, when Zilic was backing out of a parking space after fishing. There are several other major cases continuing from this year into the next.Lynn elementary school teacher Kimberly English, 49, was indicted earlier this month on charges of armed assault with intent to murder; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a car; reckless operation of a motor vehicle; and violation of a restraining order; after she allegedly tried to run down her estranged husband’s new girlfriend on Sept. 10. An arraignment date in Essex Superior Court has not yet been scheduled.Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett
