Girls hoop: Swampscott in final of Malden tourney

The Swampscott girls basketball team had no problems in dismantling the host of the Malden Christmas Tournament 48-21 Friday night.Swampscott jumped all over Malden right away and sprinted to a double digit lead in the first quarter. The Big Blue led for the entire game.”It’s nice to see the girls play so well on Christmas break,” Swampscott coach Abrom Roberts said. “It’s all about building confidence and I can see this Malden tournament really helping us going forward the rest of the way.”Leading the way for Swampscott was the duo of Jacquie Walsh (11 points, 2 steals) and Olivia Cook (8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals). Swampscott plays Danvers in the Malden Christmas Tournament championship.Danvers 38, Wakefield 33The Falcons, 2-1, got 15 points and 15 rebounds from Emily McNulty, who scored 11 in the second half with the game in the balance.The Falcons turned the ball over 28 times and shot only 9-for 26 from the line.Tonight’s final is at 5:30.Fenwick 58, Beverly 33At the Masconomet Holiday Tournament, the Crusaders raised their record to 3-2 as Kate Lipka had 17 points, two steals and four rebounds.Lexi Rise scored 12 points and had two steals while Colleen Corcoran pulled down five rebounds and Gianna Pizzano handed out five assists.The Crusaders are in the tournament final tonight (7) against Masconomet.Everett 46, Saugus 42At Everett, the Sachems (1-5) were down 36-17 in the third quarter, but Saugus would go on a 25-10 run from that point. The Sachems got to within four after Mikayla Niles hit a three pointers with 46 seconds left. Everett was able to close out Saugus from the free throw line.”I was very encouraged from my teams fight in this one,” Saugus coach Mark Schruender said. “The girls never gave up and I was very impressed with their effort.”Niles led the way with nine points for Saugus; Kathryn White set the tone defensively for the Sachems.Peabody 49, Winthrop 38At Winthrop, the Tanners (3-1) took a one-point lead into the half (25-24). Peabody outscored Winthrop15-7 in the third quarter, and never looked back. Carolyn Scacchi has a strong all-around game for Peabody (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks). Sara Hosman chipped in with 12 points for the Tanners.Revere 41, Pope John 33At the Revere, Winter Classic, the Patriots (2-2) led 27-24 early in the fourth quarter, but came to life in the fourth quarter. Revere outscored Pope John 16-7 in the final quarter. Ally Hinojosa hit five big three pointers for the Patriots (17 points total). Tiphani Harris was three points away from a double-double for Revere (7 points, 12 rebounds). Revere will play Bedford in the Revere High Winter Classic championship.
