LYNN – A late afternoon snowstorm resulted in more than a dozen accidents but it was a late morning crash on Lynnfield Street that took the life of a Lynn man.Antonio Romero-Lopez was killed Thursday around 11 a.m. when his car collided with a large panel truck.Lt. Richard Donnelly said it appears the car driven by the Essex Street man, who was in his 20s, swerved into oncoming traffic as it rounded the bend just past Great Woods Road.”The road bends there and it was slippery out in the morning,” he said.Donnelly said the incident was under investigation but he did not expect any charges to be filed in the incident.By late afternoon the snow started to fly for a second time and well over a dozen reports for accidents were called in including one involving a police cruiser.Donnelly said police responded to an accident at the corner of West Sigourney Street and Washington Avenue. West Sigourney was so icy police decided to shut it down, he said. According to Donnelly an officer placed his cruiser at the intersection of West Sigourney and Washington Avenue effectively blocking the street.”He was in the cruiser and had all his lights activated ? when a gray Acura SUV started to come down the hill,” Donnelly said. “They tried to signal to him not to come down that street.”The car began to slide and crashed into the cruiser, Donnelly said. The officer behind the wheel was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries.”It was lower back pain,” Donnelly added.Accidents also took place on High Rock, New Park, Bridge Street, Broad Street, Dungeon Avenue, Baker Street, Brookvale, Summer Street, Western Avenue and North Common.Donnelly said none of the other crashes were as serious as the morning incident.Another officer remarked that he thought it might be quiet since it was the day after Christmas, “but it was very busy day.”
