Roundup: Locals excel at freshman-sophomore track meet

The Northeastern Conference Freshman/Sophomore Track Meet was held in Gloucester on Saturday and featured a number of impressive performances from the up-and-coming underclassmen.In boys action, Revere had several standouts, including Joseph Gonzalez, who ran an 8.8 to claim the 55m-hurdle crown. Patriots teammates Anthony Destefano (38-10 3/4) and Martin Keuchkerian (37-3 3/4) finished first and second, respectively, in the shot put while Daniel Murphy took first in the 55m (6.9).Gloucester also excelled, with four victors, including Jon Sawyer (1:41.4) in the mile and Kyle Manley (11:43.9) in the 2-mile. The Fishermen also got wins in the 1000m from Dylan Genovese (3:04.1) and from Tyler Meunsaveng, whose 6.9 trial-time was best in the 55m.Marblehead?s George Goetz and Mitch Norcross both reached 5-8 to tie for first in the high jump while teammates A.J. Ernst won the mile, running a 4:36.0. Beverly?s Jordan Rawding won the 300m with an impressive 39.5In girls action, Beverly shone brightest of all, with three winners, while both Marblehead and Peabody had two victors each.The Panthers got a win from Julianna Devitt (9.4) in the 55m-hurdles, just ahead of Classical?s Devyn Astuccio (9.8), as well as from Nora Monahan in the 1000m (3:26.8) and Abbey Walsh (11:52.9) in the 2-mile.Marblehead?s Alyssa Nye won the 55m with a time of 7.7 while teammate Sarah Oliver took the top spot in the mile with a 5:44.2. Peabody got wins from Cynthia Aroke in the 300m (46.3) and Anna Church in the shot put (29-1).Danvers? Erin St. Pierre, along with Gloucester?s Sierra Rudolph and Matilda Grow, reached 4-6 in the high jump while Winthrop?s Holly Benson won the 600m with a time of 1:55.3.Holiday ChallengeAt the Reggie Lewis Center, Bishop Fenwick had four competitors all perform well in three different events. Eric Razney won his 55m heat with a time of 6.97 out of lane one. Charlie Maistrellis (44.83) and Annette Ruggiero (44.80) both ran in their respective 300m races while Arianna Maida placed in the top 15 in the mile, running a 5:24.86. Peabody?s Marcus Vierra (50-8) and John Spillane (39) placed 2nd and 7th in the weight throw, which was won by their training partner Matt Dutton (54) of Acton-Boxboro.SWIMMINGMatignon 94, St. Mary?s 68At the Lynn YMCA, the host Spartans dropped their opening meet of the season. St. Mary?s Eve Smith qualified for states early after swimming a 2:28.85 in the 200 individual medley. Smith also placed second in the 100 fly.GYMNASTICSDanvers 133.60, Salem 126.75At Danvers, the host Falcons, who co-op with North Reading, won their first meet of the season, which was held in honor of Sarah Valenti, who died after suffering from breast cancer. Fittingly, it was Valenti?s niece, Julia (North Reading), who stole the show, winning on the vault (9.2), beam (8.9) and floor (8.65). Other Falcons winners included Kailee LeBlanc (vault – 8.9) and Alyson Kelleher (bars – 8.8). Salem got second place finishes on the floor and beam from Izzy Thesz and Maya Bural, respectively. All proceeds were donated to the Special Olympics program.WRESTLINGMarshfield TournamentSt. John?s Prep won the team championship (246 points). Individual standouts were: championIan Butterbrodt (220); second-place finishers Michael Dik (120), Hunter Costa (126), Fred Colberg (152); third-place finishers Malcolm Mitchell (106) and Jared Costa (145); fifth-place finishers Solomon White (170), Jim Messeder (195) and Jay Carnevale (285); sixth-place finisher Ben Kincaid (N Andover) at 160; and seventh-place finisher Jack Anderson (138).
