SAUGUS – Midnight might have been too late for Saugus? younger population, but the children?s librarians at the Saugus Public Library gave them a proper New Year?s Eve countdown anyway.About 20 kids under the age of 10 decorated “Happy New Year” paper crowns, made paper-towel “kazoos” and put popcorn kernels inside of plastic eggs to make musical shakers in their own celebration of the holiday. Just before noon, the kids counted down to 12 p.m. to a video of New Year?s Eve in London, then toasted with sparking cider and Goldfish crackers, and jumped on bubble wrap.?We have the cutest kids of any library,” said Director Diane Wallace, watching the kids color and run around.Along one wall in the library?s event room was a 2014 resolutions display, where the kids could choose to write or draw their resolutions and post them up for all to see. To the untrained eye, most of them appeared to be doodles or scribbles. Others promised to “draw more dinosaurs” and play with their friends more. This was the first New Year?s event at the Saugus library for children?s librarians Helena Papaiaoannou and Martha Morgan in their new roles. Papaiaoannou started as a part-time children?s librarian in Saugus a week ago and Morgan became full-time librarian just two months ago. Morgan said she got the idea to have a countdown for the kids after another librarian suggested the idea on an online forum, and she?d like to make it an annual event.
