The English High girls basketball team checked another item off its to-do list with a 56-23 win over Winthrop Thursday at English.The Bulldogs came into the game as the defending Northeastern Conference North champs and Winthrop as the defending South champs. Both teams are currently atop their respective leagues and the Vikings were coming off a big win over Peabody, which is chasing English in the North.?The girls were really up for this one,” English coach Fred Hogan said. “The turning point came in the third quarter when we went on a 17-2 run.”Catherine Stinson led the way for English with 19 points. Diondra Woumn had 12 and freshman Devinya Robinson came off the bench and delivered a boost with 11 points. Robinson was a big part of the 17-2 run. Deidra Newson had nine points. Mikayla Everette only had three points, but she was a workhorse defensively with eight rebounds and seven steals.?That was really big for us,” Hogan said, adding that Sam Holey also played well.?We?re getting contributions from everyone,” he said.Winthrop?s big gun was Kristen Siscamanis, who had eight points. This was the Vikings? (6-2) first league loss.?We lost to a better team,” Winthrop coach Ignacio Oyola said. “English is a very good team. Their press kind of hurt us. Tech also had strong defensive play from Jazmin Castro Novas, Ann Marie Teixiera and Brianna Brangman. English got notable contributions off the bench from Schuyler Hogan (12 points) and Cam Burke (7 points). The Vikings got 15 points from Jake Chiudina as well as seven points from Cody Wasson. The visitors played shorthanded, minus Eric Rosario (disciplinary reasons) and Stevie Collins, who is out with an injury.Revere 65, Chelsea 51At Chelsea, the Patriots (4-5) built up a healthy halftime lead at 37-23 and never allowed the Red Devils back in the game. Mike Dreeszen led the way for Revere with 23 points. Jason Seigal had 16 points and Ravi Ryland, eight points.?The second half, we traded buckets back and forth, but they didn?t get any closer than 10-12 points,” Revere coach Adam Rizzo said. “Any time they got on a run, Dreeszen or Seigal would come back with one.”
