Boys Hoop: Lynn squads have good evening

Steve Krause

January 15, 2014 by Steve Krause

It was a good night for Lynn boys basketball, as all three teams that played won … and won handily.English defeated Marblehead (see story elsewhere) and both Classical and St. Mary?s won as well. The Rams handled Winthrop while the Spartans took care of Archbishop Williams.St. Mary?s 66, Williams 45At the Tony Conigliaro Gym at St. Mary?s, Anthony Silfa led the way with 23 points and Dennis Bailer chipped in with eight as the Spartans raised their record to 6-2.St. Mary?s led by 10 at the half (36-26) and just kept adding to it. Jonathan Mercado, a freshman, had nine points.Classical 64, Winthrop 32At Winthrop, Philip Rogers had 17 points and Kyle Doucette 10 to lead the Rams, who are now 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the Northeastern Conference/North.Classical jumped out in front early and led at the half, 37-16.?This is a building year for (Winthrop),” said Classical coach Tom Grassa. “They have a very young team.”Beverly 65, Swampscott 54At Beverly, the Big Blue gave the Panthers fits through three quarters. However, in the fourth, Beverly had an 18-11 advantage to put the game away.?They played hard,” said Beverly coach Scott Lewis. “And we had an off-night shooting, for which I have to credit the Swampscott defense.”?We hung in there,” said Swampscott (2-8) coach Dave Born. “We talked about being tough in the paint and on the boards, but Beverly has a lot of seniors, and in the fourth quarter, they did what seniors are supposed to do.”Chad Nelson, playing in his first game since hurting his knee last week, scored 30 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Jon Berchoff had 24 for Beverly (5-4) to lead the Panthers.Salem 41, Danvers 38At Salem, the Witches (5-1) set up tonight?s showdown at unbeaten English (6 p.m.) by handing the Falcons their first loss of the season.Defense was the key to this game, Salem coach Tom Doyle said.?We really limited their big guys,” he said.Danvers opened up on a 7-0 run, but by halftime, it was 21-20, Salem, and nip and tuck the rest of the way.Jamie Dominguez finished with 11 points while David Kazadi had 10, along with 13 rebounds. Bryan Martinez-Rodriguez also had 10 for Salem.Peter Merry led Danvers with 14 points and Mark McCarthy had 12.Fenwick 71, Cathedral 52At Cathedral, Travis Maxner had 17 points and Dom Leone 15 as Fenwick raised its record to 4-6.Turnovers — or lack of them — were the key, coach John Preziosa said. The Crusaders had been averaging high in the double digits through their first nine games, but only had 10 Tuesday.?We really needed this one,” Preziosa said.Gloucester 72, Revere 54At Revere, Michael Ciambelli had 31 points and Jason Seigal 13, but they weren?t enough as Revere?s record fell to 4-6.CM 79, St. John?s 65At Memorial, the Knights handed The Prep (6-1) its first loss of the season. They blew the game open in the fourth quarter after leading by only six (53-47) after three.Kareem Davis led the Eagles with 18 points with Max Burt chipping in with 14.
