Swampscott police pursue two men suspected in copper thefts

SWAMPSCOTT – Police are asking the public for help identifying two men suspected of stealing copper downspouts from several area buildings, including Swampscott Town Hall.The suspects appear to be white males and were caught on Town Hall surveillance cameras at 2:49 a.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from Swampscott Police Detective Ted Delano. He estimated the thieves stole several hundred dollars’ worth of copper downspouts from the building.Copper drainpipes have also been reported stolen on Friday at 141 Burrill St.; on Monday at the Holy Name Church on Monument Avenue; and at 8:27 p.m. Monday at 23 Littles Point Road, according to the police log.A neighbor reported that a small gray pickup truck with a cap was in the area of the church around the time of the alleged theft. Police said no make or model of vehicle was available.Swampscott Police spokesperson Sgt. Tim Cassidy said in a text message that the thieves are likely trying to sell the copper at local scrap yards.Anybody with information is asked to call the Swampscott Police Department at 781-595-1111.
