Lynn Jets stay strong, fly to win

Steve Krause

January 16, 2014 by Steve Krause

LYNN – For two periods Wednesday, the Lynn Jets looked like world beaters while Revere looked as if it would rather have been anywhere except Connery Rink. And while the tide shifted a little in the third period, it wasn?t anywhere near enough for the Patriots, as Lynn scored a late goal (Ryan McDonald?s fourth of the evening) to give the Jets a 7-4 win and a leg up in the race for the Northeastern Conference/South crown. The win lifts the Jets to 7-2-1 while Revere falls to 6-3-2. And, says Patriots coach Joe Ciccarello, “I don?t see how anyone?s going to beat them out (for the title) at this stage. Not the way they?re playing.”The first time the two teams met, on Dec. 21, Revere scored a goal with under a minute left to forge a tie. They will meet once more, on Jan. 29.?They wanted it more tonight,” said Ciccarello. “Our leaders ? I don?t know what happened. Pucks and bodies were going through us like we were tissue paper.?By the time we woke up, in the third period, it was way too late,” he said.Lynn coach Joe Conlon saw things pretty much the same way.?Those first two periods ? those were our best two periods of the season by far,” Conlon said. “The third left some things to be desired. But I?m very happy with the way we started.”It was 2-1, Lynn, after a period and 6-2 after two as Lynn exploded for four goals in the middle 15 minutes.McDonald got his evening off to a good start at 12:59 of the first, taking a pass from Corey Wojewodzic and snapping the puck past Revere goalie Maxx Anderson. However, less than a minute later, Revere came back with the equalizer, with Brandon Mastropietro scoring off a scramble out front. Tony Uva came right back for Lynn with 14 seconds left in the period, collecting a loose puck out in front and putting it in to give Lynn the 2-1 edge.McDonald got the assist on the goal that made it 3-1, Lynn, at 1:04 into the second period. He slid the puck over to Mark Brazell who one-timed it in from about 15 feet out. Steve Noel brought Revere back to within one at 3:21, with an assist from Mario Mazzarella, but Lynn stormed back for three unanswered goals to make it 6-2 after two.McDonald got No. 2 of the evening with an assist from Brazell at 4:11, and he came back with No. 3 at 11:31 unassisted. He took the initial shot after coming out from behind the net, shot once, and then put his own rebound behind Anderson.Alex Amico made it 6-2 only 15 seconds later, also unassisted, after streaking up right wing and unloading a vicious shot on goal.Revere tried to come back in the third, as the Patriots spent more time in the Lynn end while the Jets concentrated on keeping the puck out. It didn?t exactly backfire, but Revere did manage to whittle the lead down to 6-4 on goals by Mazzarelli (8:15) and Joe Ristino (12:25), but McDonald restored order at 13:08, coming in alone on goalie Adam Comeau (who relieved Anderson late in the second period) and beating him high.?Last time out was a tie at their place,” Conlon said, “so this one feels very good. Our first line has been doing real well for us lately. They seem to be hitting their stride.”
