Girls Hoop: Waggett scores 48, Saugus wins in OT

Norma Waggett set a Saugus girls basketball school record Friday evening, scoring 48 points in the Sachems 73-66 overtime victory on the road against Cape Ann League foe Amesbury.View photo gallery of the Classical-Marblehead gameAs thrilled as he was with Waggett’s performance, Saugus coach Mark Schruender was happier to escape with a victory.”It was pretty cool watching what Norma did out there tonight, but we played a terrific game as a team tonight and are happy to get a victory,” said the first-year coach. “Our ball movement was the best it has been all season and every one our buckets mattered tonight.”The Sachems scored 16 points in each of the first two quarters, building a 32-25 halftime lead before the Fighting Indians rallied to score 38 second half points to force the extra session. The visitors outscored Amesbury 10-3 in overtime to seal the victory.In addition to Waggett’s offensive onslaught, which as Schruender pointed out, was thanks in part to her teammates effort’s to get her the ball, Saugus got 12 points from Mikayla Niles and five points from Courtney Hollett.Waggett, a senior who recently committed to play at St. Josephs (Maine) was a beast on the glass as well, pulling down 17 rebounds while blocking four shots while Hollett and Gabby Valente combined for 19 rebounds, the latter drawing a key charge in overtime.Swampscott 49, Salem 43At Salem, the Big Blue (3-7) put it all together for their third win. Jackie Walsh had 13 points including some big hoops down the stretch. Sophomore Olivia Cooke had 14 points and freshman Jamie Caponigro chipped in with 10. Jackie Panneton had a big night for Salem with 18 points.Classical 26, Marblehead 25At Classical, this one won’t be on the highlight reel.”It was not pretty, but a win is a win. The kids found a way to score one more point than Marblehead. We’ll take it,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said.Heidi Milhem had nine points for the Rams and Chenysse Hill, five. Emily Freedland and Mia Bonjiorno had six points each for the Magicians. The Rams are 6-4.Gr. Lawrence 52, Tech 27At Tech, Zulmary Gonzalez led the Tigers (1-11) with 10 points. Yerania Castro had a strong game defensively and Jamila Constantine and Jazmin Castro-Novas played well at both ends of the court.Revere 50, Danvers 46At Revere, the Patriots (4-7) are picking up a little steam. Adanna Hector led the way with 17 points followed by Cassandra DiBella with nine and Tiphani Harris with eight.”Today was our first four quarters of basketball,” Revere coach Katelyn Leonard said. “We had under 15 turnovers and that gave us opportunities to put the game away.”Hannah Llewellyn had 16 points and Ashley Arnoldy and Tina Gigli, eight points each for Danvers.Peabody 56, Gloucester 24At Peabody, Olivia Summit led the way for the 7-2 Tanners with 11 points, followed by Sara Hosman (10) and Carolyn Scacchi (8).The Tanners emptied their bench in this one as they prepared to visit Salem Tuesday.
