Steve Krause

January 28, 2014 by Steve Krause

Two area football teams held end-of-the-season banquets Sunday and Monday. At Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Classical held its dinner Monday while the evening before, Bishop Fenwick celebrated its Super Bowl-winning team. Both schools name their awards after distinguished alumni or faculty who have been influential in the legacy of their respective programs. And Classical coach Tim Phelps presented Jordan Brown with the Harry Agganis Award, in memory of perhaps the school?s most outstanding athletic alum. Brown received his award early because the Classical basketball team was playing St. John?s Prep.Gerald LeBrasseur and Bob Melanson were present to give out the awards named in their honor. LeBrasseur played for Classical 60 years ago, and the “Ironman” award named for him went to Romario Louidhon.Melanson is another name closely associated with Classical, and the unsung hero award was renamed for him a few years ago. It went to Chandler Laguerre.Brad Scuzzarella received the Boley Dancewicz All American Award. Other award winners: Kenneth Khun, Abel Marquez Leadership Award; Trey Burris, Harold Durgin Memorial Award; Devin Crayton, George Moriarty Award for Commitment and Dedication; Renzo Pappaterra, Bill Joyce Sportsmanship Award; and Ricardo Sosa, Scout Team Player of the Year.Scholar athletes were: Jose Luzon, senior; Micah Dublin, junior; Daniel Rose, sophomore; Andrew Moccia, freshman.JV awards went to James Kimber, offensive player; Danny Maria, defensive player; Ernest Owoh, lineman of the year.Freshman awards went to Dwayne Morales, offensive; Matthew Lauria, defensive; and Javier Pimental, lineman.Fenwick football coach Dave Woods said he thought long and hard, and determined that the team that won the Division 5 Super Bowl last fall was the best team in the school?s history. To reinforce this, the 1966 team that went undefeated was on hand to help celebrate last month?s Super Bowl win.To the surprise of no one, Nick Bona, who quarterbacked the Crusaders to a 28-0 Super Bowl win over Northbridge, received the team?s Ralph LeDuc MVP Award. Lynn?s Rufus Rushins was the offensive player of the year while David Hurley won for defense.Other award winners: Charlie St. Pierre, Sr. Monica Gorman Award; Tyler Kaufman, Paul Duchane Award; Dustin McCauley and Kevin Hannon, coaches awards; Tommy Parsons, unsung hero; James Traversy, Ralph Osgood Award; Nick Bona, Sal Tripoli Award; Eric Razney and Charlie Maistrellis, Crusader Awards.Freshman awards went to Colin Norton and Luke Hufnagle, coaches awards; Alex Kaupp, defensive player of the year; and Dan Mastromatteo, offensive player of the year.Next year?s captains are Hurley, Matt Renzulli, Bob Carrillo and Aiden Moulton. The cheerleaders were also honored.
